Have 1 nice house in a place you don't really care for but family is close and stable job (assume you get along and do things/ help each other out)

Or have 2 decent smaller houses in two different places?

Assume either situation the house(s) is paid off.

You give us nothing to go on with option 2.
Is one of the smaller houses on the beach, at a ski resort or on a pristine lake.

Details OP, details.

Option 2 is where house 1 is. +  house somewhere else for  either vacation or part time work. Option 2 neither house will be "nice" but they will be functional in decent areas. Preferebly with a few acres. I mean I could try and find a beach house or lake house or cabin.

Option 1 wouldn't be a mansion or anything but 2-3k sqft maybe 2-5 acres.  Nothing special but nice throughout.
