I would prefer afternoons or early evening, but it usually ends up being in the morning.

I am at the gym by 5:15 am 4-5 days a week. Why? its the ONLY time I have.
I am also a morning person so that schedule fits me pretty well. In bed at 9.. up at 5.

I had a buddy that I work with state "If you work out in the morning, your metabolism is higher during the day than if you not work out during the morning."

Is there any truth to that statement?

I worked mids for many years, and would always hit the gym at 6am. My body is used to getting pounded in the morning... plus all the big guys are at the gym at night, and I'm just not that cool.
