I'm looking for something with a good blend for work and hiking.  Need to have a safety toe.  I've got my eye on these Danners.  Thoughts?  Alternatives?

I have to have a boot with a toe cap and I prefer the 5.5-6" size.  My last pair were Wolverines and they pretty much sucked.  Most comfortable boot I've ever owned, but half the sole was like foam rubber and wore completely through in 7 months.

Here's a link to the Wolverines I have.  I'm looking for a GOOD boot in that style.

I have a pair of those, love them, just about wore out though.

I got a pair of Danner Vandals and like those even better.

Check those out too.

How long did it take you to wear them out (the GTX)?  Did you wear them all the time?  I wear boots all the time.  I typically use them for walking in the desert (for work and play), climbing ladders, walking warehouses, etc.  Basically I abuse boots every way I can.

ETA:  Damn, the Vandals have terrible reviews on their site.  I wish I could sort their boots by Made in USA.  Seems the Chinese one's get the worst reviews.

Sunday bump.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy the Danner GTX but wanted to check for a little more feedback first.

I have a pair of Bates GX-8, side zip, composite toes that have been super comfortable and have held up very good.

Side zips...are the best investment you could make.

I managed to get a pair of the Danner Instigator steel toes in that GOODFRIEND promo fiasco. Third pair for me. Had several pairs of the Danner USA Quarrys before, including the discontinued non steel hard toe. The trade off for the Chinese Instigators is sneaker comfort (Hard for me to find in a steel toe) for longevity. The Quarrys held up about 2 years vs. 1-1/2 for the Instigators.

What's the difference between the Ultalite and the GX series from Bates?

I've had 3-4 pairs of Ultralites over the past several years.

Awesome!  Thanks!

ETA:  Well shit.  Not a single one of their made in USA boots meets my needs.  The only one that's even close is unavailable because they're sending them all to the army.

I've always been a Red Wing fan for work boots. I just retired my latest pair. I wore them for just under 3 years and you know what I do for a living. They were the 2406 model. Still debating about it as the upper is still in decent condition, I should have them resoled and new eyelets put in and I would probably get a couple more years out of them.

Healy's is who I usually get mine through. Healy's

Redwing 2240 with the Redwing heat moldable insoles for a top of the line custom fit. This combination is the most comfortable work boot there is. So comfortable you'll wear them weekends. Make a great hiking boot as they are styled just like a mountain boot. Composite safety toe.

Forget traditional Goodyear welt resole construction. Buy a new pair every year. zero break-in.

These are the best workboot bar none but you must get the Redwing heat moldable insoles to really make them work. This is a slightly thicker insole and the boot is designed for them and with them fit best. I walk all day on concrete and these boots are the most comfortable there is with the insoles by far.

Nice boots, but unfortunately don't suit my needs.  It looks like I'm going to have to go with boots made in China.  I tear the toes of boots up and I HAVE to have a toe cap.  None of the Made in USA boots I can find have that option.  Frustrating.

Here's what my boots look like with a toe cap after 8 months:

Here's another pair after about the same time period without caps:
