So, about a month ago, some of the apartments around me started moving in Section 8 folks from the city. Boy. Times have changed. Since they've moved in: 1> A shooting. 2> Several home break-ins 3> A stolen car found in the lot 4> Cars getting broken into. 5> Hoodlums fighting in the parking lots 6> Same hoodlums, drinking and getting high 7> Boom Boom boom music all night long as they drive around the partking lot. 8> My mail being stolen. And I still can't carry a weapon on my person. They can though and I still can't figure out how that works. Oh yeah, I remember. Gun laws protect the criminals. Not me or you. Oh well. Off to buy a bigger lock for my door. |

A couple of years ago, they started building "low income housing" outside of an affluent neighborhood in the DFW area in Texas. Thought that it would raise the standard of living for the section 8 trash. Property values have plumetted and the crime rate has soared. Gov programs, just sicken me. Instead of giving them a hand out they should give them a boot up their ass. If you can make it to the post office to get your welfare check and food stamps, you can hold a job, even if it is as a postal worker. BTW I "was" raised on welfare and section 8 because my father was a selfish SOB and my mother was a lazy, manipulative piece of trash. She still is. So I know of what I speak, I left home at 16 because I hated that life. |
| I used to work on property management software for HUD, RHS, Tax Credits, et al. I took the job not knowing that welfare recipients can actually be paid to live in very nice apartments, much nicer than what I had in college. After gaining some experience, I bailed, partially due to being disgusted by the welfare business. I grew up in a blue-collar family that was probably (legally) allowed to receive food stamps. My father was too proud to accept hand-outs. I'm personally glad for that. It taught me to work for the things that I want in life. |

Can you have pets ? The best thing in the world is a rottie for making those around you listening to the BOOM BOOM rap, play nice. They will Never break into your house. If you can't carry a gun, walk a rottie. They are great dogs with a undeserved reputation of being mean. They are good natured dogs with a BIG head. They are respected by those who need loud bass to get though their thick skulls. |

the city of birmingham got a bright idea. The tore down the downtown projects. In it's place they are building a new housing facility. They want to make it a mix of high, middle, and government housing. This is supposed to mix the ghetto dwellers with the bank presidents and make them WANT to improve their quality of life. Anyone else think it took a REAL dumbass to come up with this plan? |

Quoted: Anyone else think it took a REAL dumbass to come up with this plan? No,no,no. It is an EXCELLENT idea. The PC crowd living there will find out what us real world dwellers have known all along. After the "bank presidents" and such get jacked out of their Mercedes and Lexus rides a few times, they will get a clearer understanding of the nature of the situation. This is not a bad idea, according to Democrat sociao-constituancy insurance logic. Think about it. Carjacking, raping, thieving, murdering, drug addicts have the right to make a living just like the rest of us, don't they? You can house your criminals and victims all in one building. It has the side benefit of being able to then do away with police cruisers since they won't have to actually drive anywhere. Much like a your own little ant colony. It's a self contained economic machine. Oh, and then you can honestly say that your "streets" are safer too. Again. Sounds EXACTLY like Annapolis MD. Good riddance MD! May you rot in your own filth. Oh, and IBTL!!! --LS |

That sure sucks, I'm sure that the city had a nice public hearing where residents were able to voice their opinions and politicians were able to get some kick back from the developers. One of the sad things is that our military enlisted who legally qualify for food stamps live in housing that is so sub standard that we have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to bring it up to minimum section 8 standards. At the base that I'm stationed at there is a closed housing section that can't be given away because there is DDT and arsnic poison in the dirt, lead in the paint, and asbestos in the attics - yet it was perfectly safe for our military to live in and their children to play there. The housing wasn't closed for safety reasons .... clinton closed the housing and the hospitial for cost savings. |

| In Fort Worth there is a large Section 8 "community" right next to the police department HQ which is right next to the county jail and all of the court buildings. I'm guessing they did this to help all of the mobility challenged residents in the ghetto. They now have a short walk home after getting bailed out. [:D] |

i remember visiting an out of town friend not to long ago. while we were driving, i noticed some new townhouses going up along the river. some were already built and i commented on the quality of architecture and location. i was then informed that they were being built for low income housing. i thought it was a joke. the units looked comparable to what i've seen selling in the $300,000 range elsewhere. had i not heard many stories and seen photographs of "nice" housing utterly destroyed and covered in filth after just of few years of occupancy, i might have been more supportive of the idea. |

Quoted: ok what is Section 8 housing is it a pc term for "Ghetto"? Section 8 = housing paid for by the taxpayers. I am with you guys 100% about how awful it can be when bad people get in there. It is also worth mentioning that not all poor people are bad, and some of them actually take advantage of various programs and better themselves and become productive members of society... |

A buddy of mine bought a fixer upper in, well, not a ghetto, but a low-income area. He made some improvements, tried to raise his two daughters. Soon some scumbags moved in next door into a rental. Next thing you know, there are prostitutes walking on the sidewalk and making deals in front of his kids, ridiculous amounts of traffic coming in at all hours to buy drugs, and general disorder and disrespect. He and his wife tried to set up a neighborhood watch, but no one was interested. Finally, they took matters into their own hands. Everytime someone picked up a hooker, they took pictures of the guy and copied down his license plate number. They would then run out and ask him if he knew that was a prostitute he was picking up. Usually the guy would haul ass... This left the girls without any "work". The drug dealers were a little more sophisticated. They had kids on bikes constantly patrolling the area, calling on raidos when the cops were nearby. My friend used to same plan. Took pictures of everyone that came to buy some crack. Wrote down license plates. Called the police everytime his neighbors did anything. He wrote the owner of the rental property, and asked him to evict these thugs. The owner could not or would not(I don't know which). Finally, the guy convinced the local paper to do a story about the area. When reporters were walking around asking a lot of questions, the customer base again decided to take their business elsewhere. After about two months, the bad guys were gone, and a working family moved in. I love it when a plan comes together... Not a shot fired. |

Quoted: I thought that a section 8 was "mentally unsuitable for duty" in the military? Why is everything called "section 8" usually negative? That's what I originally thought, I thought the mental hospital may have been trying an experiment, LOL. but a girl in the office told me it meant housing I paid for pooor people to live in. Aint that some cheit? I don't mind heping em get back on their feet (but I'd rather it be out of the kindness of my heart thru donation of some sort, not socialist re-distrubution of wealth), but it is indeed BS that they get nicer places to live than our military. When I was at the MCT training in the Corps, we had a head that was so fucked up that when you pissed in the urinal, it went right through what was remaining of the drain onto the floor. There was also no hot water, it didn't make much sense to even go to the head. It was more sanitary to piss in the woods. |

Well, I'm happy for your buddy, but he only pushed the problem onto someone else. I'm not blaming him, but the problem now moves into someone else's neighborhood. |

Quoted: Quoted: Section 8 = housing paid for by the taxpayers. You got that right....A few years ago I was looking for an apartment, so I went into this really nice complex that had just been built in my town the previous year. I sit down in the office to discuss all the terms: [blue]ME[/blue]: So,...how much is the rent. [red]MANAGER[/red]: $750.00 per month [blue]ME[/blue]: GREAT!...I can swing that, no problem. [red]MANAGER[/red]: (looking at my application)...OH,...Im sorry, you can ONLY live here if your total yearly income is LESS THAN $15,000 [shock] So,...Im sitting there puzzled, looking at a parking lot full of nicer cars (even a couple of Accuras)...and also some older cars that had $4000.00 worth of custom rims on them (and who knows HOW much stereo equipment)...And I say to myself "The MATH is not quite right here" |

"Keep working:Millions on welfare depend on you" Send the lazy F'ers out to find work, sayeth I. They pulled this same crap in Conneticut. I lived in a typical suburban neighborhood. HUD had built a zoo not too far away. I used to listen to the gunshots at night while lying in bed. That's when I started carrying a .45 at all times. After I chased a carload of scumbags down the street, wearing only jockey shorts and a .45, "enemy activity in my sector dropped to next to nothing"...but it was no place to raise a family, so off I went. The people who think this crap up should have to LIVE in the neighborhoods they create, and taste the pain they've created. TJ |
| I understand your frustrations guys, and I agree 100% with most of it. But be careful of the broad brush ok? I grew up very poor and lived in low income housing for 8 years. It was in a small town in the 80's though, so we didn't have gangbanging. We did have some partying, thefts, junky cars laying around, etc. But my dad left when I was 4, and my mom was a drunk, had to go through a couple years of trying to get sober, THEN, she came down with uterine cancer. By the time I was ten and my brother nine, she was well and able to try and raise us. OMG were we terrors. If it weren't for public assistance, who knows where we would have been? We didn't turn out the best, but by God we both became productive members of society....and conservatives too! |

My parent's town just recently started a condo complex in what WAS a pretty hardcore area. The condo's abutted the local train station and had a pretty good location. They weren't cheap and good people moved in. What you now find is a take over by educated, well to do, white people. They're coming back and the only thing in their way is one of those ghetto complexes. Too bad for you, but these ebbs and flows are nothing new and one day it will reverse itself. Just think about Harlem! |

I just want to clear something up here. I have nothing at all against someone that needs help and then works to get back on their feet OR cannot, for whatever reason. What pisses me off are these idiots across the street who live like kings. They don't work. Yet, they drive BMWs and big SUVs. They wear cloths and shoes that cost more than i make in a week. And, when they don't get their way, they scream and jessie jackson comes running and everyone looses their balls. in response to the dog suggestion, i already have one. Not a Rot, but close. I've got an American Bulldog, weighs around 140. They run when they see him. What they don't know is that he wouldn't really hurt anyone unless he had too. In response to where I live, I like the sound of that - Tactical Neighborhood. I think that is what I will put on the invites to poker night. After the light, and just past the tactical neighborhood..... And, to all of those here were in a time of need (myself included) and pulled yourself out and are now productive members of society, my hat goes off to you. You are what the system is meant to help. It's these damned deadbeats across the street who piss me off. I am thinking it is time to leave this town and this state (Illinois) and head down to Texas. Or something. I don't know. I cannot take this much more. Boom Boom Boom Boom. Man |
