So I have a Linksys wireless router. I can get 11MBPS but the wife can only get 0.5 MBPS. Everywhere but home my wife uses her laptop she hooks up at good speed. She took her laptop to a shop and they told her all is well but that someone may be stealing bandwidth. I have WEP security enabled.

How can I tell if someone is swiping my signal? Personally I do not think this is the problem but the guys at the shop got my wife worried.

WEP is not enough.

Change to WPA encryption or higher.

Use Mac address filtering to allow the router to recognize only your computers.

Use a long WPA shared key with plenty of characters.

MAC addy filtering would be a good start... Disable the wireless transmission, see if you still lack bandwidth, go from there...

Every pc has a unique identification called a MAC address. You can find your MAC address on your computer. I don't know which Linksys you have, but a generic google search turned this up:

Wireless Router Config. - Security - Wireless MAC Address Filtering

It should be pretty easy to do. Just pay attention, and if you think you won't remember a step or sequence, write it down in the event that you need to back track.

You should see connection lights for each computer on the router.  If there is more than yours and the wife's computer, someone is connected.

But that isn't the case here, I think.  I bet the antenna connections on the wireless card have come off.  It should be easy to fix.  Shut it down, turn it over and open the access panel.  There should be two thin wires connecting to the card, these are the antennas.  Make sure they are seated well.  It is a TINY coaxial plug and it can come loose.

Go to their website and make sure you have the latest firmware for your router. That can solve a lot of issues. Also update all the wireless software and drivers too on your computers.

He could start with changing to WPA or WPA2 encryption.  That's easy to do and would seal up his network.  Then he can work on configuring Mac address filtering.

not true, there are 4 lights on the router for computers, only for direct hook up with cat5/6. most routers can share up to 50+ users wirelessly, and you wouldnt know the difference looking at the lights.

If your getting 11 and shes getting .5 then its not someone stealing yoru badnwidth. its something with her connection to your set up.

I would start checking to make sure she is connecting and getting a valid IP Scheme from your router.
