What's the opinion around her regarding Windows 8?  I've been using XP at home, 7 at work and getting  a laptop tomorrow with Windows 8.

Upgrade you Windows 8 laptop to Windows 7.

Windows has a cycle of decent OS - shitty OS

widows 2000 , ME,  XP, vista, 7, 8, ...

DONT DO IT! Its the suck. In so many ways. I hate mine. If I knew everything then I wouldnt have bought it. Now Id have to spend a lot of money to get it usable. Or just deal with it for a few years till I can replace it.

This.

Is it a touch screen?

It boots faster than win7.
Task manager is awesome.
I like how I can right click where the start button used to be and it has all important tasks right there to choose from in the right click menu.

Yes it is, and even if my laptop was a touchscreen, I wouldn't want 8 on it.  I had a free "upgrade?" to win 8 and it was only on the laptop for an hour, glad I did an image of my hard drive before I made that mistake

I have been switching all of my computers to Windows 7, I loved Windows XP but Windows 7 is fine.  I don't think any of my homebuilts could install Windows 8 but they all still work fine for what use the get so I won't get a new computer until they die or Windows 7 is no longer supported.

I've got netbooks and one laptop that get used all the time.

I can't see using a tablet for anything other than reading books or quickly checking something online. I've got a Kindle and can't stand the whole touch screen crap.  Windows 8 being designed for tablet like use right?  Why are tablets coming out with attachments to make them more like a netbook or laptop?

That's what I did!

Classic shell

And it looks and feels like windows 7

The ONLY thing I don't like is I can roll back to IE 9 or Firefox 16.

There's a work website that doesn't work with anything newer than those (SHITTY IT Department!!).

Don't get it until the kinks have been worked out.  My sound card no longer mixes Dolby  Digital live, now that I have 8 (it will do just fine when I run the test, all the channels get their appropriate signals, but in use with movies or game it doesn't output DDL).  Games are unstable, some are unplayable.  There are still drivers and other pieces of software that aren't 100% compatible.  7 seems like a fine OS, 8 will probably be ok in time.

I thought it sucked at first, but it's not too bad.  I didn't like how it didn't come with a Starter version of Office like my laptop did with 7 but then again I got my laptop at the end of 2011 and I got my desktop a few months ago. Both are Acers

Luckily we have the Microsoft Home Use Program at work and I can get it with two licenses for $20.00.  I hope it goes well since Amazon will have it at my door before I get out of work tomorrow.

Win 8 is the same core as windows 7 but it has been trimmed down and runs leaner than 7...
if you have touch screen it helps but you will get used to the interface changes over time.

It is significantly more secure than XP.

Go for it, learn your command keys and you will be happier

If you find it easy to learn simple, but new, processes and you aren't afraid to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with the basic functions of a device, then you shouldn't have much trouble with it.  I think Microsoft jumped the gun a little and overestimated the ability of most people to accept any significant change.  That's all.  Otherwise, it's a perfectly fine OS.

The multitude of claims that state or imply that it is utterly unusable are absurd.

I'm amazed, and glad, that that exists.  However, I've gotten used to W7 (compared to XP) and I'm afraid to "contaminate" W7 and maybe introduce update problems.  Everything works so well that I'm afraid to try tweaking it.

It seems quite stable on the new Asus gaming laptop I bought after the old Sager gave up the ghost last week.  The Sager ran Vista Ultimate for the five years it lasted and I never understood all the hate for Vista. I'm not a gamer but my experience with computers for many years has been that it is best to start out with the fastest available at the time and it will be usable for  five to seven years.  Go cheap and mediocre and you will be replacing it in two to three years.

I don't understand why Microsoft finds it necessary to drastically change the user interface and file structure with every new OS but they do.  Make it more stable and secure please but think about what it costs businesses to have all their employees take the time to learn a very different interface.  That is why many companies blew off Vista and why many will blow off 8.

I'm not the computer nerd I used to be but I can learn my way around a new OS fairly quickly so I'm fairly comfortable with 8 now.  It has not hiccupped a single time so far.  I'm not real pleased with the change in backup facilities or the pressure to have an email account with Microsoft.  The part of the interface intended for touchscreen users looks cheap to me but one click gets me back to a desktop so I can live with that.

All the "cool kids" like saying that Windows8 is horrible.

As for me, I've been running Win8 since it came out and I have no issues with it. The metro start menu isn't a significant improvement over Win7, and that's about all the average user will notice being different.

I wouldn't recommend the average user goes out and buys Win8 just to upgrade their existing Win7 or Vista machines, but I also wouldn't downgrade a new Win8 machine to Win7.

------------

That said, avoid Windows RT. It looks like Windows 8, but won't run normal windows applications.

[#41]
It looks different than Windows XP, for most people that is just to scary to deal with.

Other than that it is a good OS, although it does take some getting used to. Most complain that it doesn't have a start button, once one understands that the Metro interface is the start button all is well.

I really didn't like it when I first installed it a year ago, I liked it so little that after a couple of days I got fed up with it and didn't bother with it for weeks. Once I gave it another try I changed my mind and like it a lot.

My wife recently got a new Alienware X51 that came with 8, she didn't like it much at first, but has come to love it after figuring out how it works.

+1

Pretty much the same as Vista. Everyone who couldn't learn pissed their pants when a new OS came out.

Sure, the best way to avoid a short learning curve is to jump into a *nix based OS.

Get Start8 from Stardock to bring it back to reasonable.  Otherwise a decent OS

Honestly, I was fully prepared to hate Windows 8.  But, if you add Classic Shell (and yes, it's stupid the Start button has been removed from the desktop), it's really pretty good.  It boots and shuts down faster than any Microsoft OS since DOS.  I have seen no compatibility issues and I run a suite of pretty intensive engineering applications.  I would recommend it.
