I won a bid on ebay for some scuba fins last weekend. The seller is in Alaska. The USPS tracking number shows the package was in Anchorage on Monday. That was the last scan. Delivery was guessed to be between Wednesday and tomorrow.
No further scans. It's fun to watch tracking to build the anticipation. I am not impatient but why do they have a tracking system if they don't use it?

To make things exciting!

Had a package go all over the U.S. before I received it. Guess it was on tour or something!

Lazy employees don't waste time scanning, the individual's scanner is not functioning, or the label got messed up in transit.

USPS tracking is pretty primitive. It doesn't update until it hits your local distribution center.

Never had a problem out of them.

Add Mail Innovations or Smart Post to the mix, then things get shitty.

My favorite part of USPS tracking is when they change the delivery date after such delays then still claim the shipment is on time.

It can be fun.  I watched a package go from Portland to CA to TX to Puerto Rico before hitting CO.

Their tracking is getting better, I was able to track a recent package as it took a scenic trip to the wrong part of the country while I was here waiting on it.  The time wasn't terrible, but why was my package sent 100 miles West instead of 30 miles East from a nearby hub?

I had once criss cross the US twice , before it got lost

made to to both mine and the recipient's respective post offices before coming to a stop and disappearing forever at a hub

but as you said tracking is much better than it used to be

used to be no info what so ever until about 48 hours after delivery then everything would appear online

USPS tracking has come a LONG WAY in the last decade.   They are even good at tracking stuff I order that is shipped via post office of foreign countries (I am a closeted vintage RC car enthusiast and many parts I get come from China or Japan).  Hawaii and Alaska are somewhat unique and the routing of a package is much less consistent than from Asia.  I am assuming this is because we get a lot more stuff CONUS (non-oil and non-mineral) from Asia than we do from Alaska and Hawaii.

I love their "tracking". It's "Shipping Info Received" until it's delivered, then you get the details. Thanks for the timely updates, USPS!

I have ordered rare Jdm parts that I waited for almost 10 months to show up. I usually don't ever track my packages unless I ordered something and it's been over two weeks.

I spent most of my time growing up overseas, my father was an Army officer. If you think you know what slow is. A 12 year old boy waiting for his shiny new GT BMX bike mail ordered from a shop on the west coast, shipped to an APO in Germany knows what slow is.

I never really have an issue with this, but there is one thing that is possible...

IF you put too much tape over the barcode, it wont scan easily. I bet if it doesn't scan the first time they say fuck it and continue with the next package.

Their tracking sucks. a while back I was selling a gun and I was waiting for the money order... I checked the tracking and it said it was delivered... Checked my mailbox and nothing... Swore someone took it. But then it said it was delivered 2 minutes after it was sorted... Ended up calling the post office and finding my mailman. It was still at the post office and delivered the next day... I felt like the buyer was going to think I was full of shit because it said it was delivered but I was saying I didn't have it yet.

I've ordered some things that get shipped from San Francisco (Zenni Optical).  The post office may scan them in at that location but then they disappear for over two weeks even if shipped priority.

I talked to my local postal clerk at a rural post office and he said if he misses one scan on a package he gets a phone call from his supervisor down state and has his ass reamed.  Every package I receive from the local post office gets scanned.

I called Zenni about a missing package once and they said the SF post office lost an entire shipment they dropped off for 2 weeks.  SF postal workers were probably all at a drag convention for two weeks.

My 3 rural delivery people are apparently contract workers who drive their POVs.  I've had missing packages located under their car seats, etc.

Pretty much.

Every other day it's someone bitching about UPS, FedEx, USPS, whatever the fuck.  How about just simmer down and be patient for a minute or two?  If you need something on time, don't buy it off Ebay for one, and don't expect miracle shipping from a place which is practically speaking in a different country and is weather dependent(doesn't really apply this time of year).

The OP stated it was shipped from Alaska, did they use parcel post?  If so, keep on waiting as it is akin to the military's space available mail.  Shit will drop off the face of the earth in Anchorage and pop up a couple weeks later in Seattle.  I did a bunch of Ebay, Gunbroker, EE, whatever transactions from AK and other than the parcel post or media mail, USPS was pretty good from there.

In general USPS tracking has gotten a hell of a lot better over the last couple years.

lol

I ship hundred of packages a year. USPS Packages arrive 3-4 days before UPS package, no matter the local. Just send a package to VA and CA. The VA package was delivered the next day, the CA package will take two days. I put them both in my mail box, and the tracking website showed they were picked up within 15 minutes of my mail man driving by.

And for 30-50% LESS than UPS

They said it still may show up. Delivery date was set for Aug 7th.

Easy to get a refund if they do.

We ship several hundred items per month with USPS, cheap, reliable, just as fast as UPS , Fedex.
About 6-7 lbs Fedex gets cheaper

I won an auction for Scubapro Jet fins with spring heel straps for $56.00. I didn't even notice where it was shipping from- $24.95 worth of USPS shipping goodness.
It showed departed Anchorage Post Office on 8-31-15. They might be waiting for enough snow for the sled or something.
The USPS delivery date guesstimate was Wednesday thru Saturday, so they might arrive tomorrow.
I'm not really in a hurry, but I wish it would show something.
