Cuba was the center of slave trade in the Cribbean,so many of the ships transporting slaves from Africa stopped in Cuba.Often slaves stayed there,as they were bought to work in sugar cane and tobbaco plantations for the ruling Spaniards. This is in the 1500 ,after they enslaved the native "indian" population and worked them until they literally died in captivity. The much stronger African slaves replaced the native "indians".So unlike South and Central America, in which you still see large populations of indians mixed with the spaniards,Cuba had little "indian" blood (and racial traits in its population)and was largely composed of African and Spanish descendants. To make a long story short,Cuba was quite well integrated racially, and there was a significant amount of children of mixed races (called mulatos)of lighter complexion than blacks and caucasian features. I grew up in a low middle class neighborhood where white,black,asian,Lebanese,etc children played together.The parents were friends and I remember often having dinner at my house with my parent's black,Asian,etc friends; or going over to their house. Blacks were pretty equal,although there was still some racism and racist people.But much less than in the US at the time(1950's) Cuba's population before Castro was probably(I am really guessing here)30-40% black and now it is probably 70-80% black(again I am guessing) My father,who was not an educated man by today's standards but who had good principles, always taught me that all men were equal(he may have read it the Dec. of Independence since he loved the US). [b]He told me not to ever judge a man by his race,physical appearance,nationality,etc.[/b]And if I ever made a racist remark, he would instil in me [slap](he had 20"arms [rolleyes]so I listened) all the principles some of you today consider PC.Except he believed in it then ,like I do today. It was no artificial BS to make people think you are an enlightened human being. [b]He believed every man deserved respect and to be treated with dignity,until he did something to lose it.[/b] Opposite to what I read on this and other boards all the time. |
