Going to the fun shop today, need advice.

I am going to buy a new .22, and can't decide between a 10/22 or a Marlin 60.  I don't care about aftermarket upgrades, just want a good reliable plinker.

Between the two, what is the hives recommendation?  Is the Marlin really the equal to the 10/22?

My only experience with .22 autoloaders is my Savage 64, which is being handed down to my youngest son for his birthday next month.

The Ruger 10/22 is upgradable and customizable as all get out. You can get a wide variety of mags for it. it is awesome.

The Marlin Mod 60 is insanely accurate right out of the box, and almost never jams, and you don't have to worry about mags because it is tube fed.

If I had to get one, It would be the Ruger.  But that is because of capacity and quick reloads using mags.

If I wanted to leave a gun unchanged and I did not care about fast reloads, I would get the Marlin.

One vote for a .22 AR conversion

OR

Dedicated upper

Depending on your particular budget.

Barring that, I am a 10/22 guy just for the sheer volume of aftermarket product available.

Based on the red portion above I say get the Marlin 60.  IMHO:

Pros for the 10/22 (My son has one) offers: customization & detachable magazine

Pros for the marlin (this is what I learned to shoot on when I graduated from bb/pellet guns) offers: Slim, light, easy to handle, accurate little plinker/squirrel & rabbit taker

eta: looking at your poll I have to confess I'd like to have a CZ 452 or 453 as well.

I just recently built a Volquartsen 10/22 and it's my first .22 rifle.

ETA: Actually, I've had an original Costa Mesa Armalite AR-7 for years, but don't shoot it because it's impossible to find mags that are worth a damn.

10/22.

Mags.

Had both, sold both.  The Marlin is more accurate, more reliable (but only because of the mags) and you won't go out and spend a stupid amount of money customizing it into something you won't want when you're done.  The Ruger is a better blaster with big mags (assuming you can find ones that are reliable), but you'll spend more because you'll shoot more.

I actually like my older Remington 550i better than either the 1022 and the 60, it's an auto that will fire shorts, longs and long rifle cartridges, it's tube fed (which I prefer for it's reliability), it's as accurate as the Marlin and it's got a built in shell/powder deflector for us lefties.

All that being said, I like my Marlin 57 lever 22 best of all the 22 rifles I've owned.

Ok, let me clarify.  I do not want a bolt action .22.  Nor do I want a pistol or AR conversion.  I am after a .22 autoloader, preferably stainless.  And like I said in the OP, I don't plan to customize the rifle.  I want a solid plinker that i can also use during squirrel season.  Nothing like a good bowl of tree rat stew.

And for the Marlin 60 guys.  Does it come drilled and taped for a scope, or is it strictly a dovetail on the receiver?

1. Model 60- I have two. A really old blued one and a new one in stainless and they are both great guns. Very reliable, lightweight, and more accurate than they deserve to be.

2. Marlin 25n bolt action from a pawn shop or its replacement, the 925. I got a 1998 model 25N for 125 bucks in excellent shape from a pawn shop and it shoots great.

3. Marlin 981T- bolt action tube fed rifle.

I think Marlin's micro-groove barrel really makes their rimfires particularly accurate.

Remington, just to be contrary.

I like them a bit more than the Ruger, partially because while I know I have a dozen 10/22 magazines I can only find two of them. If those end up missing the thing will just be a funny shaped club.

That's fair.

Were I to get a 10/22, I would actually build one with all of those interesting parts and add things like the bolt lock for supressed single shot operation, a really nice trigger, and so on.  Do you have time for a project?

No.  I just don't need another project right now.  That's why, even though the hive is in favor of the 10/22, I think I am going to go with the Marlin.  With little aftermarket support, the temptation to go crazy just will not be there.

I own a Marlin 60 and a 10/22.  As has already been stated the Marlin is surprisingly accurate and reliable.  The 10/22 is fun and accurate enough.  After market magazines have proven to be its downfall for reliability.

Buy both, they are cheap.

10/22. But if you do get a 10/22, you MUST buy the Volquartsen bolt release mod. The stock bolt release is a pain in the ass –– to release the bolt, you have to simultaneously pull back on the tiny charging handle and depress and release a tiny serrated bolt catch in front of the trigger. With the VQ mod, you just pull back the bolt and let it fly.

This. You can make them into any kind of .22lr rifle you can imagine.

ETA: I fail at reading the thread. I am ashamed.

You should still get one. Easily obtainable and reliable mags aren't really "aftermarket upgrades", but still make a big difference.

Marlin 60 will outlive your grandchildren.

No frills, No problems, tried and tested, works every time.

My 10/22 is fidgety with a wide variety of ammo and has done this since new. Upgraded to a VQ extractor, kept it ultra-clean, used wet lube, then dry lube, used different mags, different ammo, etc. and it still has never cycled reliably. I know many will say their 10/22 works 100%, but no more for me. I'm done with it. Sold it to a guy on Gunbroker who I told all this and he wanted it anyway for 175 bucks. So maybe he will get it figured out.

My new model 60 has had 10 ammo issues in 500 rounds and these were underpowered loads from the same box of Federal Bulk Pack.

For your application, the Marlin is by far the easy obvious choice....  I personally have been shooting the same one for over 33 years (I don't know how many years before that my Dad used it) and have not replaced a single part on it....    Stacks of dead critters and nice close groups on paper....

Mine did the same until I replaced the charging handle/recoil spring assembly. Now it cycles reliably with any ammo with my good mag and most ammo with my bad mag.
