Guys,
I know this has been done before, as to which one is best, but I have a specific user in mind.

Some friends of mine dropped off a computer, it was FUBAR.  Compaq Persario model S3100NX.  NO reinstatement CDs for XP Home.  She called HP, and they don't sell the reinstatement CDs for that model anymore.  Of course, she never created any.  Heardwear is ok, just the OS was hosed.  No data to worry about.

80 Gig HD, 256MB, built on everything else.

Users surf the net, print, check their email via a web interface.  Thats about it.  They have smaller kids.

Not the most computer savy people, and are comftorable with windows.

What OS should I load?  What would be easies as far as a learning curve.  Think easy, as in for kids easy.

Thanks

Ubuntu. I hadn't used Linux in years and recently converted. I'm glad I did. It's easy to use up front, and once you want to get more technical, it's a breeze.

It'll probably be a tad slow on that machine.

But, considering the users who had it before and how fubared it was, they'll probably never notice.

Ubuntu or Fedora, probably. And you don't *have* to use Gnome or KDE, which will speed things up considerably.

Depending on your skill level with Linux you can choose a distro on two main categories: 1) Install ease/Hardware detection/support 2) package management. After you get past those two differences there is very little in differences between each distro out there.

Overall, Ubuntu works well for most.

Ubuntu or Xubuntu.  Xubuntu will be a little faster on older hardware.
