I’m going hunting for javelina next weekend and am still debating on what gun to use.  As of now I'm debating between an  AR (.223), revolver (.357mag), Rem 700 (.30-06), or Enfield (.303).

I was originally planning on using the AR, however a buddy of mine is telling me that the .223 would not be the best round to use and suggests my .30-06.  The .30-06 has a 6-40x scope on it and might be a bit weird to use so close.  I still sort of want ot use the AR or maybe the Enfield, but would have to fix the Enfield (shoots about 2in to the left at 50yrds)

I know this should be in hunting but figured I'd get a better response here.

it sounds like the 30-06 will keep you furthest away from those nasty bastards

Javelina are not that big... any of the weapons you mentioned would work.

Seen lots of pics of very large hogs taken with an AR.  Many much larger than any javelina you'll ever see.

ETA:

I hear atl atl's are making a comeback.

223 all you need....there not that vicious by the way...when you shoot they scatter fast

I like my SKS (7.62x39) or my Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag topped with a 4x scope.

They arent that big or tough....

I personally use my Ruger .44 Mag carbine.

I would suggest open sights and anything from a .223  on up.
A 30.06 is quite over kill but will definatly kill them

I would even say that a 12 Ga. with oo buck or slugs would work if close enough. I dont know the enviroment you'll be hunting.

When I come onto them it is in EXTREMELY thick brush and you better have something you can bring up quick and get the shot. I think a scope is out unless you are going to take one at 500 yards

Lots of people use .223  for javelina. I'm using my AR myself. My biggest decision was what ammo to use. I was considering Winchester 45gr varmit.

I'm debating between my AR and my Vanguard .257Wby.  Either is more than enough for piggies.

I was thinking my 12ga too but I only have a 1300 defender....I'll be going down by Florence

I have killed them with a .22 magnum rifle, so your AR will be more than adequate.

True Dat!

A quick pointing AR loaded with NATO spec 55gn FMJ's, 64gn Remmy Power Points, 60gn Nosler Partitions, or Barnes X will do the job EVERY time.

I hunted them with a .357 and would recommend the same.

A rifle or shotgun isnt challenging enough IMO.

It was much more fun with a pistol. Been hunting with rifles all my life so it gets a lil old esp. when you are in close.

You didn't say what type of hunt you are doing - close up and personal or way back and use em for target practice.

I use and prefer my .44 Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk, handgunning pigs is a blast (bow and arrow is also fun) - using a rifles is just to easy.....

I think your .357 mag would work fine.

Without a doubt.  However since it's a new rebarrel job and I haven't had the chance to use it yet....well, it's piggie time.

when we hunt em, we just climb up in trees like a couger, wait till one comes by and drop on em and bite thru the back of their knecks with our teeth and sever their spinal cord. works great.

have a buddy that was watching a film about african lions and he wants to try clamping down on their throat like lions do but i dont think his mout his big enough.

i know a girl that is squeamish about the kneck thing so we let her use ninja claws..

the .303 would be better than the 30-06 only in that the iron sights would be much better in most javelina hunts.  However both are way too much cartridge,
