I am thinking 21 feet or so . The distance from my bedroom doorway to the full end of the hall.

I'm not experienced enough to offer a worthwhile opinion, but if you can accurately measure the offset between the sight and the bore, and if you can map out the trajectory of your preferred ammunition, I'd say that you could figure out an acceptable "maximum offset" at reasonable handgun distances, and then calculate a zero that'd keep you in that range for as long as possible.

Kind of like how the "improved battlesight zero" for ARs is zeroed at 50 yards, and gives a maximum offset of something like two inches vertically out to 250 meters or yards or something.

The longest distance you ever think you will fire.

Simply because that would be the hardest distance to aim at and would be better served with laser aim assist.

At closer distances the laser would be good enough for a reliable hit.  And you could always learn your holds.

As previously stated, figure out your rounds trajectory. It will intersect the lasers path twice, if you know what they are and your good a judging distance, your laser just becomes a reference point. With enough range time at known and unknown distances the bullet's path and where to aim will just become second nature.

20 or 30 ft is where i did my laser grips on my little 642.

I figure that's as far away as i'd need to shoot without using the iron if necessary.
