Besides having the proper equipment, what makes a makes a man, a man, instead of a boy.

Being mature enough to respect women, have his own opinions, and the heart to protect others IMHO
That's a problem today.. no real rite of passage.
except maybe combat... but I fear it's not like it used to be. No booty/loot. |

When he does the hard thing, even though he is loathe to do it, because it is the right thing.

QFT. Most people can't even do this. |

Stand up for his beliefs.

I know a lot of men who never did military time, and in my active duty time I met a few troops who weren't men. |
Well that's mature. |

"A Man should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. Specialization is for insects."

Robert Anson Heinlein Since age 13, I've spent my whole life trying to be a Heinlein character. Took a very battered nd almost memorized copy of 'Starship Troopers' to BCT with me. |

An awesome set of tools.
And the ability to put up with some womans nonsense. |

When I took the practical test as an EMT, the younger guy ahead of me had trouble with the examiner's questions which were all from the book. He (the student) said to hypothetical scenarios what would you do in this case etc. and answered "Call for help?" to which the examiner boomed out, "You ARE the Help!" The line we cross is when you go from being a receiver of services to a provider.

That's the quote I thought of when I read the topic. A MAN should be versatile and responsible. |

“The measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

QFT In my opinion here is what makes a man 1. Doing the right thing even when its the hardest thing to do 2. Taking responsibility for your actions no matter what 3. Treating women with respect |

The wisdom to understand that a man's place is often to sacrifice of himself
for the betterment of others . That sacrifice may be his time, his money, his possessions ,his wants and needs, his happiness, his security ,his safety,or even his life . That sacrifice can be for his children, his wife, his parents, or for any worthy cause except for personnel reward . A dog can sacrifice itself ,but a man willingly goes into the fray fully knowing the consequences of his actions . Most other things an animal can accomplish . Willfull sacrifice for another is the mark of a true man . I'm happy my father made sure I knew this lesson . |
Snaps, you are more "man" than many of the idiots I am forced to work with. Meant purely respectfully, Ma'am! |

Rudyard Kipling had it right:

I can live without a computer. I suck at cleaning a deer, I can get by on rabbitts and fish, and a kick ass garden.
Hard to tell what a man may do to keep alive. I just hope the grammar nazi's go first. |
Just my opinion, but a man doesn't need to ask what makes a man. It's not something that can really be defined, you either are or you aren't and when you become one you know it and know if someone else is or isn't. |

2 pages and NOBODY said "Take care of his babies"?
Fucking pathetic........ |

I dont have any children |
That's easy... if as a woman you don't have that figured out by now, you're in for a long unhappy life.
The correct answer is Honor. From my Grandparents: Honor is what a man does even when no one else is looking regardless how painful. They come in all shapes and sizes, but one thing is always the same. Honor, period. Love him or hate him, a man is always Honorable. |

Besides a pair of testicles??
Id say it is the ability to do what is right even if you really don't want to, to sacrifice your own happiness and freedom in exchange for the happiness and wellbeing of others. Treating women with respect is never a bad thing either and far to many males today seem totally incapable of that. I'm pretty sure I know who this question is in regards to Mama Snapps.... I've told you before and ill tell you again, your 50 times more of a man than that spineless bastard will ever be. (testicles aside....) And to be quite honest.... Military service does not automatically make you a man, I can think of a few boys that joined up and I'd hesitate to even call them human. Joining the military might make you a stronger person, a patriot or even a hero in some cases but you must be at least partially a man before hand for serving to make any difference in your character. |
It is "nazis." |
Capital "N" because it is a proper noun. Nazis. |
That, and the fact that there are women in the military kind of puts a damper on that theory. Really people, it's the testicles, and the age of 18. All that other stuff you guys are talking about needs another word, because "man" is taken |
Ive been married 18 years since I was 17, some good some bad I would have to say The right woman makes a man.

I LOL'd |

Honestly.... I know some females that act like more of a man then most males I know. Thats all i'm gonna say. |
