Saleen S-7... and it can be your's for $375,000.

I've never even head of them before. This would have to qualfy as the SR-71 of the highway (or would it?)

That car is a very nice car.
But as far as being the "SR71 on the road" (an SR71 is more of a straight-line jet, and not very maneuverable), it is not.
There is a street car here in DFW that gets 1.7mpg on pump gas and 880rwhp on pump gas.
It is a Lenny Fabian custom car, and it smokes!!! It is street legal too. It is a Chevy Nova.

Saleens have been around for awhile, but not sold in the US as far as I know. One of the recent models had a front seat that was centered in the car, rather than on one side or the other.

I believe that you're thinking of the McLauren F1. BTW, I'm pretty sure it beats the Saleen. O-60 in 3.2, 231 mph top speed. ~ $1,100,000 after having it imported and legalized.

I can't believe how similar a McLaren F1 and that Saleen look. If you take off all of those Lamborghini Countach style vents, it looks just like it. Seems like he just decided to take the fastest, mass produced street legal car and then rip it off by throwin in some slots.

The guy who makes them has a very interesting story, too. Basically educated himself in engineering in Argentina, moved to Italy to work in Lamborghini's factory scweeping the floors and living in a tent. From there, he started his own automobile production company, making his own dream car. The only things his factory DOESN'T fabricate are the headlights and the Mercedes engine.

These cars are insane. When you open the doors, they automatically crack the windows until you close the door, so the closing of the door doesn't discomfort your eardrum from the change in pressure. I find that mid-boggling.

Yup - No question if I were God, I would own and drive a McL F1.

And I wouldn't get a federalized one for the US market. 'Cuz I wouldn't have to.

I actually had the honor of seeing an F1 in real life. It was at a Scottsdale, AZ Ferrari dealership. My couzin and I were there taking pictures of the Ferrari's for his photo class and we heard one of the employees mention something about a McLaren. We followed him outside and saw it. I guess the owner is a race car driver for Ferrari and was at the dealership showin it off.

The coolest part of that whole story is that I am probably one of the only guys to have ever rubbed my butt on a McLaren F1. If anyone want to touch my butt for a $25 fee, you to can be a part of history. lol. But seriously, it ROCKED!!!

I think the McLaren is one of the best looking of the "supercars," but the new Ferrari Enzo is faster. I just got a new issue of Road and Track, or maybe it was Car and Driver, I have subscriptions to just about all of them. Some guy generously let the staff of the magazine break in his new Enzo and then performance test it after 1500 miles. Just checked, it was R&T. 0-60 in 3.3s, 1/4 mile in 11.1s at 133mph, 218 mph top speed, 1.01g on skidpad, 73.0 through slalom, 109ft 60-0, 188ft 80-0. They said it was faster than the McLaren, or any other car they'd tested for that matter. Not as pretty, but damn fast for a production car. We're not talking tuner cars, but very impressive for a factory ride. Bargain base price of $643,330.00 =O If you could afford it it wouldn't be so bad, since if you could bear to buy and sell it you could probably make a few hundred thousand. When the F-50's were new they went for closer to $550,000.00 I believe, and I saw one sell for $1,000,000.00 at an auction. They're known to appreciate, wish I could afford one. Edited to add: Not to mention that one of a kind sound...

Must be, I didn't look up stats on the McLaren but if you go buy or read the July R&T, it's there in print. It doesn't claim the top speed is faster, only acceleration. I just checked the article again: McLAren 0-60 3.4s, Enzo 0-60 3.3s, McLaren 1/4 mile is listed as 11.6s at 125 mph at the bottom of pg 63 and the beginning of pg 65. Where are your numbers from?

You know it says alot when a car that is has been out of production for what, 5 years?, 6 years?, still is the best machine you can get.

There's no doubt of that, I agree, but you can't see the outside from inside! =) The roadholding ability is waaay better though than the McLaren, according to R&T, Ferrari 1.01g, McLaren .86g? I personally would go with whatever had better handling and roadholding, given the choice. Looks be damned, to a point anyways. Maybe buy both and slip the McLaren body onto the Enzo?!? =)

It seems like everybody and their mom publishes their own stats for cars. I've followed the F1 since it's inception, and I've seen the times very on most of it's performance stats. I think it's always wise to go w/ the best/fastest achieved stats on a car, b/c the performance times are only as good as the person driving/testing the car. Best times achieved on the F1 vs. Enzo shows the F1 is still the fastest production car in the world.

I smell a shoot-out. We need to get somebody to drive the cars for R&T, so that it's a GOOD driver, and the same guy runs the numbers on both cars about 20 times and takes the best numbers. That, IMO, is about the only way to say accurately which car accelerates faster. Top speed isn't important to me, as a simple gearing change or a tweak in aerodynamics can alter that significantly. Both cars have approximately the same horsepower and torque, the Ferrari having a slight (25HP 6 LBFT) advantage.
