Can they ever get themselves out of their rut? Alcoholism, unemployment, crime, and now crystal meth addiction. They seem to be self-destructive. They live in the US, what's to keep them from assimilating into society and getting a proper education. |

Didn't someone post a thread asking about sterotypes just hte other day? Yeah - indian reservations must be a hell of a place to grow up. (A friend of mine is Oglala Sioux and grew up "on the res" - he's now a university professor pulling down big bucks, so he managed to get out of the rut). But yeah - my impression is that on the reservation, tehre's not a whole lot of infrastructure or employement opporutnity, etc. (except I guess for the ones with caisno gambling - maybe that'll help 'em) |
Aren't you making a rather broad generalization there brother Clean_Cut? Many of them seem to be running rather successful casinos these days. And some people with indian blood even post here on Arf.com. Having said that. Do you have direct experience with "Native Americans" on which to base your opinion? Zen "This is my rifle, there are many like it, but this one is mine" |
I am one. We stayed off the reservation and made our own way. I put down "white" on every form I fill out, even though my skin is brown. If I put Native American on forms I'd probably have a better ride, but I choose to be judged by my own merits. I have very little sense of an "Indian" id, so I'm not crippled by that culture and its trappings. It's much the same as what keeps poor black people tied to the projects. It's a mindset, and those who deviate from that mindset are labelled as something else, though that doesn't necessarily happen in the tribes. And Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have nothing on some of the corrupt tribe leaders that are out there. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
