Its called the American Growler. US Marines are paying 100K a copy for the retooled jeep.

I could have some fun with one of those. Details please. When they first started the v-22 Osprey, the jeep was still in service. For over a decade while the Osprey was in development, no one noticed that the jeep was gone and that a humvee wouldn't fit inside. So, now the Marines need a new $100,000 vehicle to replace the $2000 jeep for fast mobile deployments. |

Just a bunch of left-over M-151 parts. |

Quoted: 100K a copy for the retooled jeep. Sounds about right. $30K to build it. $50K to the reelection funds of the politicians who urged it be bought, $20K profit. What's not to love? |

That's what I saw. The M1161 Growler is an Internally Transportable-Light Strike Vehicle (ITV-LSV) designed specifically for use with the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.
So the ITV is just a growler variant? |

Its called the American Growler. US Marines are paying 100K a copy for the retooled jeep. According to wikipedia, they run $200,000 for a scout version up to $1m for a mortar version with a trailer. From Wikipedia: The initial contract for the ITV system was awarded to American Growler in 2004. By 2008, unit cost had risen by 120%, leaving each Growler scout variant with a cost of $209,000 per unit. The Prime Mover mortar contract price rose by 86%, to $1,078,000 cost per unit. The first Growlers were deployed to Marine units in January 2009 for field testing, one year beyond the contracted delivery date. By August 2011, 209 M1161s and 102 M1163s had been produced, with 42 additional M1163s on order.
So they were a year late on a 4 year contract and about double the cost of what was proposed, typical |

The DoD loves to spend tons of money on things, the Marines were using Mercedes G-Wagons before this latest vehicle!
They called it the IFAV, or Interim Fast Attack Vehicle. It was simply the mil version of the Mercedes 290 GDT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interim_Fast_Attack_Vehicle And the company has closed it's production facility: http://www.thepilot.com/news/2012/sep/16/american-growler-closing-robbins-plant/ |
