What do most Law Enforcement departments use a 9mm, 40SW, 38, or 45 ACP Handgun?

[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What do most Law Enforcement departments use a 9mm, 40SW, 38, or 45 ACP Handgun?

I have a CCW and carrey a G26 with 147 Grain JHP. I want to know what Police are using and what kind of ammo. Is it ball or can they use HP or JHP? I am military so the 9mm is the primary for my me (officer USAF) so I know about the bullet and have seen what they can do. I am confortable with my weapon and also the M-9 but just what to know incase I should look into getting another weapon if the SHTF according to the folks around here. I have seen alot of 40SW handguns on the PD here in Alamogordo so thats why I am asking.

In 9mm a lot of departments use the Ranger T line of ammo, which is a great round the 147 gr is making a come back in JHP's also.

Any FMJ 9mm round is a very poor performer because it yields a very small wound channel. 40cal and 45 make a larger wound channel because of their size and shape of bullet. Flater points cut where pointy like 9mm, pushes.

Around here everyone uses 9mm, usually in a Glock. Older people in the sheriff's office still carry the Smith and Wesson .357 Magnums though.

Here 9 out of 10 depts issue Glock 22s or 23s Harder punch and bigger hole than a 9mm, lot more capacity than a .45. Ranger 155 gr is the prevailing ammo here also with Golden sabre being a close second. Only dept I've ever known to use hardball was chicago. I'm sure more do but it's idiotic IMO

In the world I would say 9x19mm, in the US I would say .40 S&W.

Hey Scott, I'm just down the road in El Paso and most of the PD and Sheriff's dept I know are using 9mm. A friend is talking about switching to the 40s&w.

Most agencies have moved away from the 9 mm. The most common caliber anymore is 40 Auto. 357 SIG and 45 Auto are somewhat common as well.Duty ammo brand ranges across the board. Going with HydraShok or Golden Sabre will not do you wrong.I know of only one LE agency that still uses ball, and I believe they just switched to JHP this last year.

in my area .40 sw is by far the most common. glock is the most common gun with mostly mod 22 and 35 issued(sheriff dept)

We used .38 special +P until 1990. Then .45 ACP until this year. Now we carry a .40 S&W. No clue what will be next.

.40 seems to be the most often carried these days in my neck of the woods.

We carry hollow points to avoid overpenetration. I use Winchester Rangers.

AFSC is 21R Logistics Officer. I am just trying to figure out if I should get a 40SW compact or Full size do to what would happen around AF bases I would be stationed at. I would probally get a CZ in 40 SW but I was planning on getting a G17 to keep to the 9mm. Cheap practice and good stopping power in different loads.
