An interesting question, I think, because of the sheer numbers. An AK .30 caliber round in modern times and in many Third World countries is going to have high death rates, and possibly a .30 caliber round from WW11 may be high as well. Or, a particular bullet/cartridge that spans many eras like the 9mm pistol round? Anybody know?

I thought I read the 38 special, not including wars.

I would suspect 7.62X54 Russian or 8x57 Mauser. When you add up all those killed by either round in both World Wars and the fact 7.62X54 is still in wide use in machine guns which ever of the 2 rounds lead the other most likely wins by a large margin over all other rounds. I would guess it is not even close. “ditto,it's fact” I doubt it .22LR may have killed more civilians; but maybe 100 million people were killed in the 2 World Wars. A significantly larger number had to be killed by 7.62X54 Russian and 8x57 Mauser both than ever by .22LR. If you add up all the people murdered in the US in the last Century (assuming an average of 20,000/year which is higher than the actual) it could not total more than 2 million, If every one of those were killed by .22LR (and it would actually be way less that half of the total) it still could not come close to those killed by either 7.62X54 Russian or 8x57 Mauser.

7.62x39. Today, 6/1/02, more people were killed with this caliber than the .22. and since 1945 its been killing, G.I.s, entire races, creeds, and religions, teachers, civil rights leaders, freedom fighters, terrorists, children and alot more. Also tomorrow this caliber will have more deaths than the .22.and the day after and so on. GG

Gotta be 8mm German. The primary rifle, and, more importantly, machinegun round on both fronts in two world wars. Think of all those millions of Soviet troops gunned down with MG-42s and Kar-98s.

Obviously the 7.62x39 because according to the news the AK47 is used in every single firearms related crime in the world.

Good Point SteyrAUG.. When ever anything firearms related happens they do show the AK.

A musket ball, .60 caliber, give or take. It all depends on how far back you want to look...

.22 lr, seriously? It was never in a single war. I've never known a single person who has been shot with a 22. Though i am not doubting it as a possibility, I just find it hard to believe. Keving67

jtw2, What did you sleep through world war ten, too? (WWII??) doubleyou, doubleyou, aye, aye, sir! The 22LR, not being used as a military cartridge cannot have the fatality numbers of bullets used in wars. It may be #1 in USA for murder and accidental deaths, this I wouldn't dispute.

I don't think there's any stats that break down casulties in wars based on specific type of round, artillery, shrapnel, bombs, etc.
