I dont buy eagles....I stick to pre-65 U.S. coins.
I paid 12.7 x face value for quarters a few weeks ago.
Paid 13 x face for 1/2 dollars recently.
Dollars go anywhere from $13-18 each depending on what the grade is and how many you are getting.
You get a little less silver content (compared with eagles) but you get both intrinsic value AND numismatic value.
They are the perfect hedge.
actually, just because Eagles are new, doesn't mean that they don't have numismatic value.
GAE come in 1/10, 1/14, 1/2, and one-once sets, not to mentions proofs starting in 1986.
a set of business-strike silver eagles consists of 24 (using my fingers). this constitutes a collection, and therefore, potential value. a MS-70 PCGS also counts
also - if not mistaken - proofs and the like are considered numismatics when talking about FDR's Executive Order 6102.
saying that, I am on the same page and prefer (United States) pre-65 coinage, cause that's what I've grown up with.
If I find an Eagle of sorts at near spot prices, it's added to the stack.
in the end, you'll have a bigger stack
(edit: speeling)
I'll take a Double Eagle anyday over a GAE
