Random women when passing on a sidewalk, in a hallway, etc. What percentage smile or greet back vs ones who continue staring forward with a scowl, ignoring your existence?
I'd say 70% acknowledge vs ignore.

70% is probably a good estimate for being acknowledged in public by everyone, not just women.

They pretty much all acknowledge me, but I haven't ever said "M'lady".

I am a short, ugly, bridge troll so if I make eye contact with a woman I usually get a face full of pepper spray form strangers or a sexual harassment complaint at work.

I would imagine this is strongly regional. Around here I'd say getting a greeting back is 90%+.
I would guess in New York City that might be a far lower number and, really, I imagine that number would be far lower in most large urban areas.

The percentage is always higher when they know it's for science.

Do you literally use "M'lady" or do you say something like "good afternoon"?
ETA: Because if you're saying "m'lady" and getting a response it is due to fear of upsetting you and ending up being worn as a skinsuit in your dungeon.

If you are not well north of 70% then you are probably tipping your Fedora incorrectly.

When I tip, should I give a nod or should it be a slight turn and a nod? Is Ohio too far north for a Panama? I'm thinking about going with a Boater next summer. It should compliment my new bow tie style.

Never "m'ladied" anyone, but I do say good morning to female colleagues at the office. Does that count?

A proper fedora tip is conducted by raising your arm on the opposite side of the female's approach. Gently pinch the rim with your thumb and index finger and tip your head gently downward whilst simultaneously enunciating, "M'Lady". NEVER close your eyes or allow the brim of the fedora to occlude your line of sight with your female target. It's very subtle, but if done correctly, enormously powerful.

A nicety, but not a necessity. A well-executed M'Lady and fedora tip should be more than enough.
