My story. 1989, I was 14 years old hunting rabbits. About 1/4 mile from my house when I heard what sounded like a stick break about 100 feet behind me. I turned around and immediately saw what looked like someone throwing a bucket of water in the air, much like you would do to put out a fire, without the bucket. I walked over to where I saw it happen and the ground was indeed wet. No water or person aroun.

There are others, let's hear yours.

huge rusted old 12 cylinder engine block in the middle of the woods. This was back in the 90s in some state game lands in or near Berks county. It was probably a mile away from the nearest road or trail.

No clue why it was there or how it got there. Never found it again afterwards.

Hunting in a log abandoned tree stand in swampy south georgia... about dusk I start hearing what sounded like rocks being throw at the trunk of the tree...then I hear....wooooo...up...then a moment later woooooooo... up....but louder like its pissed... I cannot see who or what it is...but then its throwing brick sized  rocks at the trunk of my tree and nailing it hard...I yelled out..."leave me the $#@& alone...it continued...I yelled "I've got a gun and I will shoot your ass"...two or three more rocks hit the tree....they are not coming from the same direction...there are more than one thrower...I fired a shot from my 308 into a tree I could see about 20 yards away......I yelled I am leaving...I will kill the next one throwing something at me....
WOOOOOOOO...UP....The hair on my body is standing up on end as I climb down the tree...I hauled ass out of them woods...never been back in 37 years...pass that stand of woods often...

I went for a walk in the woods late one morning behind my house sometime in the late 80s. The area was basically a rectangle, maybe 1x2 miles, and was encompassed by a road. It was not a usual direction for me for a hike, and not an area that I'd walked through before.  I'd probably made it an hour in and decided to reverse direction and head back home. I came to a road, one that I had not crossed. Somehow, I was on the -OTHER- side of the road. I had to follow it around and back to my house. I still can't explain what happened. No drugs involved.

So what went down took place over the course of two nights in the fall of 2012.

I am a police officer for a small college in Virginia with a 4 lane highway to the front of the college, to the back of the college there is 85 wooded-brush covered land that the college owns, past that is a rural rout, and passed that is the Clinch Mountain, and some 27,000 acres of the Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area.

Surrounding the management area is thousands upon thousands of undeveloped private land.

Clinch Mountain is basically a tall ridge line that runs for miles and miles, I think all the way to Tennessee.

I can look from campus at times in the spring and fall and see the snow capped mountain in the background while it is still green on campus...... Common out west, not so much in the east.

Anyway.... One night after having made my nightly patrol of the campus, I had made my way back down to the lower end... The school is laid out in that there are two large buildings and the National Guard armory on the lower level on the highway side.... up top, there are five buildings that make up the "main campus" on top of the hill.... The road then circles around to a lower section on the back side... There is one brick building and a couple of ball fields, etc...

Our office was in that brick building on the lower end/back side of campus... No dorms...No housing.... No person on campus after Midnight.

Usually, at around 3:00am, I would come back down to the office and eat my lunch and rest my legs......

Place holder....

When you work midnight shift completely alone, your eyes tend to get heavy..... I have fallen asleep at work... On the first night after I had made my initial rounds and had lunch, I was sitting at the desk with my eyes crossing.... I honestly don't know if I actually fell asleep in the chair or I was just close to it, but at some point I heard way off in the distance this mournful wailing sound.... Think of hearing a train horn on a quite night, or more to the point an old air raid siren..... It was similar to that but it was an animal.... I remember smiling as I rose up out of the chair because I thought that I had dreamt it.

I got in the patrol vehicle and drove all over campus, shining my spot light but never saw anything.

The next night was the same situation... Sitting in the same office, only this time I was 100% wide awake....

I was reading something online when absolutely out of the blue this thing roared.... It started out very base, like thunder... Midway through there was a definite growl sound, and then it tapered to a much higher pitch at the end.

It sounded like it was right outside the office but it had the same effect as if you were in a quite house and a sudden thunder boom occurred... The kind that jars you and shakes the house.... I didn't shake the building exactly, not like thunder would but I could feel the vibration from it. It had a stunning effect on me.. I drew up into the office chair out of pure instinct and that's where I stayed for several seconds... Think how a deer will sometimes drop down below the arrow that was fired at it... That's kinda what I did.... I guess the instinct was to make myself small..... It was absolutely clear that I could not fend it off.

I had my pistol on me, we had a rifle and shotgun in the office and none of that entered my mind... I froze up completely.

About 30 seconds to a minute later, I hear it off in the distance again, way off, like the night before, and just like the night before, it was the same mournful sound.... At that point I was able to move again... I patrolled campus again, but never saw it and never heard it again.

It was not a bear, and I did not chase it in my pajamas.

I've done a protection detail for the President and posted that here, I've been called up for the war but our orders were eventually cut after several months, I've caught a live copperhead, I've been on crazy police calls when I worked the road, hell, I've seen some things go down at the college.

I've done a lot of things and had a lot of things happen in my 42 years, but this took the cake.

I give all of you my word that it happened and it happened exactly how I said it did.

One strange thing was finding a message in a bottle while working with kids as a wilderness therapist is Alaska. It was a letter from two girls to their dad who was lost at sea while fishing. Turned out to be from the cousins of a kid I was working with a few hundred miles away. It was found on Kuiu island and they were from Petersburg, quite a distance away. The Universe can be a strange place . . .

As a teen on the outskirts of Memphis maybe 10 miles I pulled over in a wooded area to squirrel hunt. About 100 yds in there was a granite house.  IIRC 3 stories and probably 10k sq ft. It also had a 6 ft stone wall around it and a moat. Did not go in. My guess it was a hideout/fortification from the gangster era. I don't recall any sign of a road.

Back in the 70s
To go hunting, I had to walk a mile or so down a old railway that had been pulled up maybe 60 years ago.  There were pine trees growing in the middle of it that were probably 60 years old so the railway must have been pulled up around 1910.

Walking back home one evening, I hear music, old sounding music from another era. It gets louder and louder. It overtakes me and continues down the line. Music from a ghost train still running?

I've lived in the woods a good part of my life, pretty much all of my life before I moved out at 19-20.

The first night we spent in our first house in the boonies/woods I had my friend from school stay over. I remember at some point very late at night going outside to take a leak (the plumbing wasn't finished yet, yay poors) and my buddy walked out there too. This was a wooded area down near a creek bottom and the area across the fence from us was a small corn field. I don't remember the exact order of events as far as peeing/friend coming outside/seeing what we saw, but we saw a light drifting over in the field. It looked like a tractor coming at us, which would be normal if it weren't after midnight. We uttered a curse or two and ran back inside as fast we could.

I've also recounted this one a number of times, different childhood home, not scary, but unexplainable (to me).

I went to UVA Wise, we had legitimate spotting of a Mountain Lion on campus back by the fishing pond behind the football fields in 2010 during my 4th year there. Outdoor Rec club also found tracks while hiking the path between the old High Knob shelter before that doctor's kid burned it down and Little Stoney Falls. From your experience I'd go with a Mountain Lion roaming around campus.

Not spooky or supernatural but I was defiantly scared.
Out pig hunting around 2-3am walking back to the truck in pitch black hearing a large cat scream like a woman being murdered in the treeline somewhere near by.
Needless to say I walked back to the truck with gun on fire and finger hoovering over the trigger.

I almost killed a guy 25 years ago. I worked for the US Forest Service and was doing some management low intensity cruises of timber. Higher ups had told me to be on the lookout for surveryers doing some surveys for oil companies and such. I think in the previous 3 months I hadn't seen anyone in the woods or on the roads.

Anyway as usual at lunch found me a stump to sit on and eat my lunch. I see this guy who was in his late 50's heading my way. Straight for me. I figured he saw me and was wanting something. When he was about 10 feet away I said "What's up". He came freaking unglued. Fell down. Hollered. Got up. Hollered again. Then sat down and acted like Fred Sanford having a heart attack. It was pretty loud and annoying sound.

Said he didn't know I was within 10 miles. Acted like it was my fault. Told him to get more aware of his surroundings.

Fort Indian Town Gap, PA.  Land Nav.

Went out with the candidates at night and was walking around when I got a very uneasy feeling.  I thought I was seeing things out of the corner of my eye but chalked it up to moonlight casting shadows through the trees.

The uneasiness increased until I hit my azimuth for the hardball.  I got back to my fellow cadre and the majority of candidates on the hardball.  I was asked “what took you so long?” Followed by various descriptions of the same feeling I had had.

An MP pulled up and was asking what unit we were with, etc and was just shooting the breeze.  He then said something like “I wouldn’t be caught dead in these woods.  First, there’s tons of black bear, second it’s haunted as shit.”  And then went on to tell us of old murders, suicides, and accidental deaths that happened on this training area.  One of the murderers is buried there.

Which college or town was it? My weirdo woods stories are near Clinch too.

Your account sounds to me like my account of an earthquake when I was a kid. We were sitting in the living room. Heard a low build up of a rumble. Then it got BIG, everything in the living room shook for a few seconds and then it calmed back down. You could hear it again shortly after just further away.

I was deer hunting with a muzzloader A mile or so by bicycle off the nearest dirt track, right at dusk I had something shuffling around just out of view in the scrub maybe 50 yards out.

Right at dark I hear a “ WOOF!” and a yearling bear comes tearing out of the scrub like he’s on fire, hits the trail, and turns down the trail I cut to my tree in shoulder high palmettos.

In the seconds this occurs, I realize that a scared bear is heading down a dead end trail towards a single tree that I happen to be sitting in...

Happily, he runs right past me and continues crashing across the palmetto flat for 400 yards or so until I can no longer hear him.

So there I sat, alone in the dark, with a long walk followed by a long bike ride, wondering;

What scared the bear?

Not scary, but just unexplained to this point.  In the middle of the night at elk camp last year, I heard something that sounded like a back-up alarm on a truck.  It went on for what seemed like forever, but I bet it was several minutes at least.  But I doubt there was any truck within a mile of camp, and while it was pretty rhythmic it also was not perfectly timed - the pause between beeps would occasionally be a little longer or shorter.  All the times I've been in the woods, never heard anything like that.  I figure it was some sort of bird, or maybe a mountain lion.

When I was in Boy Scouts we were camping in a non-wilderness area of woods.  It was about 300-500 yards behind a mental institution that we were doing a clean up project for.  In the middle of the night there was a VERY LOUD jet engine sound that lasted abut 15-30 seconds that woke me up.   I was awake, heard it while I was awake. I did not dream it.  I'm talking about Harrier Jump Jet loud hovering above us.
Next morning no one else heard it.

Hunting one evening and I was walking back to the parking area.  I was wearing Peltor hearing muffs with the amplified volume.  Every time I took a step, I could hear someone walking behind me, but not quite in sync with me.  If I stopped, they stopped after a couple more steps.
This is the same farm that the dozer operator saw the silhouette of a man on the edge of the woods as he was building a pond.

Same farm hunting one evening.  Heard a very loud chewing or grinding sound that echoed for quite a distance.  Come to find out, it was a beaver chewing through a tree trunk.

Same farm again, same Peltors.  I could hear the redneck that lived in the trailer across the property line vacuuming out his car/truck with Freebird playing on the radio and he was singing along.  You could hear a snake crawling across the ground under the stand with those things on. Yea, I heard that and saw him.

I hunt a good bit.  A friend who is a farmer lets me hunt on his property.  Years and years ago it used to be a county work farm.

So I am hunting with my daughter during youth season.  I am at the base of a hill looking across a cut corn field.  The hill is on my north, the field stretches east and west, and south about 150 yards.  Past that is a creek with trees (about 10 yards thick) on its edge and then a rock bluff.  The creek runs east west with the cut corn field on the north and a rock bluff immediately on its south edge.  So the layout north to south is-hill, me, 150 yards of cut corn, tree/brushline, creek, and rock bluff.

It starts to get dusk and we are really watching because that is when it typically starts getting sporty with deer movement.  In the creek/treeline to the south near dark my daughter saysm "dad what is that?"  I look where she is pointing and there is a bluish white glow in the trees right where the creek would be.  I tell her it might be the farmer so don't shoot there (the deer almost never come out that way anyway).  At dark we pack it up, walk back to the truck, and then go to tell the farmer we are leaving.  I asked him what he was doing in the creek, he said he didn't know what he was talking about.  He is a real religious guy (but doesn't push it on people), and I ask him if he has seen any weird lights around in the woods-and HE CLAMS UP.  He quickly changes the subject and when I ask again he acts like he didn't hear what I said.

OK, weird.

We go out the next morning-no deer, then back the next afternoon.  We are sitting in the blind near dusk and there is the glow again.  WHAT THE FUCK.  I text him to ask if he is out in the creek, he is at his church.  So I decide I am going to give whoever is out there a piece of my mind.  I know that they can only go east or west in the creek in the dark, or they have to come out to the field.  I tell my daughter to sit tight, I unzip the blind and take off at a dead run towards the light-about 150 yards away.  I am staring right at it as I am running and it disappears when I am about half way to it.  I light up the creek with my surefire and hop into the creek (it is almost completely dry).  I look east and west down the creek and not a soul in sight-no sounds.  I look around for a while and can't find any indication that anyone was there, just a couple of deer tracks.  I go back and ask my daughter if she saw anyone come out of the creek into the field because they couldn't go south because of the rock bluff-nope nothing.

I have hunted that field several times since then and I have seen the light about half the time I have hunted there at night.

I just figure I'll leave it alone and it will leave me alone.

People can tell you what a bobcat sounds like yowling away but until you hear it...

I was sitting in my tree stand situated above a small limestone walled coulee. Walls were about 30 feet high and beside where that draw opened up in the valley below there were only a couple places anything on foot would be able to climb out. Nice choke point for deer hunting.
I'm in my stand about 45 minutes before sunrise and the yowling begins, it's pretty weird but I'm not freaked out but that damned bobcat didn't sound anything like I expected. So I'm 15 feet up in a tree stand with my back to a valley with 30 foot walls right about 45 feet above the valley floor. This damn yowling keeps moving towards me but at my level not below me. Now I'm freaking out expect Mr cat to climb right on top of me. Thankfully it just passed me by. After the sun was up I went to survey what the hell was going on and discovered a dead elm tree had fallen into the tree tops across the valley about 20 yards from where I was sitting. Natural bridge the bobcat was using..

I came across an abandoned copper mine that was probably 150 years old up in Superior National Forest. There was a little cottage next to the mine that looked like it was maintained. The cottage looked like it was straight out of a Hansel and Gretel nursery rhyme illustration.

Grew up in the woods around NE Oklahoma.   Weird is normal.

Out mountain biking in the woods in the dead of winter.  Mostly oak trees, so everything is dead and brown.  Come around this small rise and this area next to a rock out cropping is just as bright green as can be.  About the size of a tennis court.   Grass is green and looks like it has been growing for weeks.  It wouldn't be quite so odd except  I was here last week and it was dead like everything else.  A few weeks later it was all dead again and looked like nothing had been there.

Not too far from there was a old abandoned car, or at least most of it.  The problem is this was way away from anything and was a good 3-5mile ride by mountain bike.  Unless the place used to be deforested it would have been a hell of an effort to get back there.

There is a place called Turkey Mountain in Tulsa.

These days it is a nice family place to go, but many years ago it was a gay hookup area.  It was also a place mountain bikers went.  I'd run across all kinds of gay stuff out in the deep part of the trails.  Some would try to sabotage the trails to dissuade mountain bikers from riding, so always had to be on the lookout for that.

Even came across a homeless encampment.  That was interesting.  It was a rather large compound out in the deep woods.  No one was around at the time, but it was clearly being used.

The general rule for us mountain bikers was to never back into the parking spots because that was supposedly the sign you were looking for a hookup.  So naturally we convinced my step brother to back into his parking spot the first time he met us to ride.

Heard a damn bobcat skreech literally 10 feet from me and step father at about 12 midnight while running a trotline.  That little fucker was loud, and it scared the shit out of me.  Was hiding on the bank behind some brush, and i guess we pissed it off good.

So did your step brother find the man of his dreams?

I used to ride Turkey Mountain back in the late 90's when the effort was underway to clean it up.  Some odd folks out there that seemed pretty pissed people were taking over "their place". IIRC there was a pretty decent sized homeless camp down by the tracks/river.

Yup.    Heard my first bobcat scream while I was alone in the Dead Stream Swamp one night, coming back to my truck from my tree stand.

I love the Dead Stream Swamp, but lots of people die out there.

I used to mountain bike and lot and came across many people doing drugs or each other in the woods off remote trails.  They were all always so surprised, lol.  You can really sneak up on someone quickly on a mountain bike.

I’ve had 2 strange things happen in the woods, only one I can explain, the other still scares me.

1. I went camping with the dog in a really remote area (remote enough I could scream for hours and I’m sure another person would never hear me). I brought a shotgun just in case I had to fight off a bear. I woke up in the middle of the night to the dog barking his head off. I felt like I could hear a little movement outside of the tent. I yelled “I have a shotgun and I’m coming out”, no response, so I slowly got out and was ready to have to deal with whatever it was. Nothing as far as I can see with a flashlight and I don’t see any tracks anywhere. I go back in the tent and lay there trying to go back to sleep. All of a sudden I hear a loud “SNAP”, then “WHOOSH”, then “BOOOOOM”... the sound was a tree about 100 yards away breaking and falling. I assume that must have been what woke the dog the first time. Wasn’t easy to sleep the rest of the night thinking a tree may come down on us, LOL.

2. I was going hiking and camping with a kid I was trying to mentor. I told him to be ready after I got off of work since we had at least a 2 hour drive... I get home from work and he hadn’t even packed, so we left late as shit. When we got to the trail it was already 9pm and we had at least an hour hike to get to the camping area. We are hiking in the pitch black with headlamps on and due to the fog we can only see about 15 feet. After about 20 minutes in I feel like I’m hearing something stalking us about 10 feet off to our left. So I randomly keep stopping us to see if we still hear it... every time we stop we hear what sounds like another step from the stalker, but never see anything. We hiked the whole way to camp like that and never saw anything, but I still believe we were being stalked to this day. My only guess is that it had to be a mountain lion. Whatever it was didn’t sound like small steps and I don’t think a black bear would have stalked us like that.

Night land nav at TBS. It was a beautiful, clear night with a full moon. I was making great time, when all of a sudden I saw a light in the ground up ahead. I kept going, because I didn't want to lose my azimuth.

As I got closer, I saw more, smaller lights in the ground. I began cautiously approaching the area, but I realized it was roughly circular, and probably a few hundred square feet in size.

I approached to the edge, and I saw trees growing DOWN. It was an absolutely perfect mirror of the sky, very light clouds, moon and stars. I immediately thought it was a wormhole or pathway to hell.

It it took a few minutes for it to sink in that it was a sinkhole or something that filled in with water, and I was looking at the reflection. I threw a stick into it and was rewarded with a splash. I kept going and finished the course.

Holy fuck, if I saw Stranger Things in 2006, I would have run screaming from the woods.

This happened at the creek but its out in the middle of the sticks so I guess it counts.
You can look up the spot on google maps,Topaz Mo. on the Noth fork river. Theres an old mill there and its the area swimming hole for people who live around there.
Anyways about 6 years or so my wife and I and our daughter who is a baby at the time are down there swimming and playing around.
I had been fishing and the wife decided she wanted a turn so we swapped the baby and fishing pole.
My wife is out in about waste deep water casting towards the deep spot of the swimming hole and Im directly behind her a couple yards in shallow water playing with the baby.
My wife casts and right were her lure hits the water just erupted. At first I was like holy shit a big fish just hit but that thought lasted barely a second as the water just kept boiling like a fountain. At this point I hop up and take a couple steps back out of the water and yell to my wife to do the same.
I realize now there are several spots up and down the river from us doing this, just water boiling up like a fountain.
It lasts for about two minutes and then tapered off but for the next hour or so all these spots and more when I walked a bit down stream and noticed them had pretty good bubbling going on.
Now Ive never seen anything like that happen ever. My only thought was the river is spring fed right in that area, one good pool off to the side of the main river and then walking around you can find cold spots here and there where the spring seeps through the ground in the river. My guess was maybe a chunk of rock or something broke off underground somewhere and plugged the spring for a bit until it built up enough pressure to blow out or move the blockage and all the fountain action was the product of that happening.
It was weird and I wish Id had a chance to catch it on video.

I've seen lots of weird things in the woods over the years.

Watched a button buck nibble on the foot of a squirrel my son had shot about 15 minutes earlier.

.

Weirdest is probably a dead coon my dog fund 1 day.

I kicked it over, and there was about a 2" x 3" hole in the center of it's chest, and it's heart was missing.

That was the only damage I found on it.
