[ARCHIVED THREAD] - What Is The Strangest / Most Unexplainable Thing You've Seen or Heard In The Woods? (Page 2 of 6)

Mine's perfectly explainable, but still scary AF. I'm in a stand in the corner of a large L-shapd cut field in MO two years ago. Friggin deer everywhere, and this place has some giants so I'm biding my time. Bout 10 minutes before dusk, I see a small, white pickup about 600 yards away down a hill. Shit. Deer don't spook, so whatever. I figured it was the landowner. I text him asking if he's tracking a wounded deer and he goes, nope, we're at camp. OK, who TF is this? "Poachers"
"SSSTTTHUNK" "Booom!" WTF? These poachers are slinging lead at the deer between us and missing. One bullet thunks three feet to my right in an oak, another 10 feet below and a third zips past and into the woods. After those shots they get back in the truck and book it. All this happens before I can shoot my pistol in the air. Frikken shit down both legs. I wanted to kill. |

As a teen on the outskirts of Memphis maybe 10 miles I pulled over in a wooded area to squirrel hunt. About 100 yds in there was a granite house. IIRC 3 stories and probably 10k sq ft. It also had a 6 ft stone wall around it and a moat. Did not go in. My guess it was a hideout/fortification from the gangster era. I don't recall any sign of a road. Would love to find this. |

Told this one before and kinda in the woods. Uncle and I (about 9) were fishing around a lake in Oklahoma. We hiked for a bit to get to an opening to the water that was fishable. We came to a spot with a large rock beach. Walking along the edge we came upon a skeleton. It had been sitting long enough to turn green and to me looked human. I started asking questions and my uncle grabbed me and we de-assed the area. I was told to forget it happened. Now the weird part, my uncle had about 40 years as a US Marshal then retired. If it wasn't a human I would have expected him to explain what kind of animal it was. But he was spooked by something. |

| My ex father inlaw was in the Marines, force recon in Vietnam. He told me about being on patrol and they're in the middle of a huge elephant grass field somewhere around midnight when they heard what sounded like an air raid siren just ahead. Thinking they had walked into an ambush they dropped down and listened. Nothing. They lay in the field until just before dawn when they exfiltrated the area. He said that there were no villages near where they were and they never figured out what it was. |

I hunt a good bit. A friend who is a farmer lets me hunt on his property. Years and years ago it used to be a county work farm. So I am hunting with my daughter during youth season. I am at the base of a hill looking across a cut corn field. The hill is on my north, the field stretches east and west, and south about 150 yards. Past that is a creek with trees (about 10 yards thick) on its edge and then a rock bluff. The creek runs east west with the cut corn field on the north and a rock bluff immediately on its south edge. So the layout north to south is-hill, me, 150 yards of cut corn, tree/brushline, creek, and rock bluff. It starts to get dusk and we are really watching because that is when it typically starts getting sporty with deer movement. In the creek/treeline to the south near dark my daughter saysm "dad what is that?" I look where she is pointing and there is a bluish white glow in the trees right where the creek would be. I tell her it might be the farmer so don't shoot there (the deer almost never come out that way anyway). At dark we pack it up, walk back to the truck, and then go to tell the farmer we are leaving. I asked him what he was doing in the creek, he said he didn't know what he was talking about. He is a real religious guy (but doesn't push it on people), and I ask him if he has seen any weird lights around in the woods-and HE CLAMS UP. He quickly changes the subject and when I ask again he acts like he didn't hear what I said. OK, weird. We go out the next morning-no deer, then back the next afternoon. We are sitting in the blind near dusk and there is the glow again. WHAT THE FUCK. I text him to ask if he is out in the creek, he is at his church. So I decide I am going to give whoever is out there a piece of my mind. I know that they can only go east or west in the creek in the dark, or they have to come out to the field. I tell my daughter to sit tight, I unzip the blind and take off at a dead run towards the light-about 150 yards away. I am staring right at it as I am running and it disappears when I am about half way to it. I light up the creek with my surefire and hop into the creek (it is almost completely dry). I look east and west down the creek and not a soul in sight-no sounds. I look around for a while and can't find any indication that anyone was there, just a couple of deer tracks. I go back and ask my daughter if she saw anyone come out of the creek into the field because they couldn't go south because of the rock bluff-nope nothing. I have hunted that field several times since then and I have seen the light about half the time I have hunted there at night. I just figure I'll leave it alone and it will leave me alone. |

On a trail in the Sam Houston national forest after dark. I had stopped to take off my pack and install my headlamp so I could see where I was going. As I was adjusting my headlamp I heard twigs snap very close behind me. Like as if someone was stepping over and snapping twigs. I turned around in that general direction aiming my headlamp and saw exactly nothing. Spooky!
So I loudly said I guess I better get going back to the car. Needless to say I was a littler leary. |

1983, working on staff at Boy Scout camp...we had a habit of not using the trails/roads to go to troop camps...most direct route through the woods. No flashlights. Just went where we needed to the quickest way.
Headed to a camp site at the top of the mountain, a green ball of light about the size of a basketball appeared in front of me and my buddy. It basically led us up the hill through the woods for about 10 minutes. Then it slowly moved off to the side our direction of travel and dissipated. Weird is that it didn't really scare us, but we clearly talked about it as it was taking place..."you see that?"..."yeah, I see it"... |

Grew up in the woods around NE Oklahoma. Weird is normal. Out mountain biking in the woods in the dead of winter. Mostly oak trees, so everything is dead and brown. Come around this small rise and this area next to a rock out cropping is just as bright green as can be. About the size of a tennis court. Grass is green and looks like it has been growing for weeks. It wouldn't be quite so odd except I was here last week and it was dead like everything else. A few weeks later it was all dead again and looked like nothing had been there. Not too far from there was a old abandoned car, or at least most of it. The problem is this was way away from anything and was a good 3-5mile ride by mountain bike. Unless the place used to be deforested it would have been a hell of an effort to get back there. |

I was 14 or so. Walking with my cousin toward a deer stand just before sunrise. We had about a 200yd walk from camp to stand, trail was narrow, maybe 3ft across, but very clearly defined. Even before the sun came up you could pretty well see where you were walking because of the contrast between the light dusty trail and the surrounding brush. We had a low power flashlight that we used to help navigate too. Walked to the stand without issue, sat an hour or two, and heard my uncle fire a shot in the distance. Our instructions were to return to camp if we heard a shot, to help dress the animal etc. So that's what we did, started back down the trail, and about 50 yards in, we come to a hell of a grisly scene. Blood everywhere, all over the trail. Splatter/spillage that largely covered a 3ft by 3ft square area on the trail. Blood that absolutely positively wasn't there 90 minutes ago when we first used the same trail. There's ZERO chance we could have walked past/through the blood without seeing it, let alone without getting it all over our shoes. Best we figure, a big cat probably killed a deer or something and dragged it off. Scary thing was, we didn't hear a sound, and it had happened within an hour or so of us being in the same area. Uncle used to swear up and down that there were no mountain lions in the area, but oddly enough he quietly took up carrying a sidearm into the woods from that day onward.... |

Strangest thing I ever saw in the woods was an animal that looked like a ball of black fur. It climbed a tree fast as a cat and hid. Way to small to be a bear. It didn't have a tail or much of a neck. It just looked like a ball of black fur that moved really fast. A neighbor saw it a week or so later in a pasture field. This is central Ky, very rural. Everyone knows their critters by sight. I don't know what it was, and neither did he. There is rural legend of a black cat around here that gets up to about the two thirds the size of a mountain. Lots of people have claimed to see them going back to when the area was settled.
I kinda doubt the furball I saw was related to them, it didn't have a tail. and these kitties are supposed to have tails almost as long as the body. I have never seen one. Lots of others have. A guy got a picture of the ass end of a Cougar on his game came 4-5 years back. Not really a woods story but in the fall when we would top tobacco in the evenings when the sun go down these humming bird sized moths would come drink the tobacco bloom nectar. They have the super fast wings like humming birds and hovered like them. When we would get to the last few rows of a patch it seemed like thousands of them would be crowded up on them and bats would be swooping in from every direction catching them. It was weird you could hear the bats colliding with them and chirping. I was always paranoid A would get bit by a rabid bat. |
|
I was night vision hog hunting a few years ago with a buddy and we kept getting snorted by a deer for over an hour, but there was no deer. It was circling in on us and at one point the snort was within a few feet of our position but we never saw it even after going white light in all directions It happened around 0400 in a wide open field with 500m to 1500m field of view. We were sitting on a hay bale, not in a blind and had complete visibility in all directions. It was weird as hell but not creepy or unsettling Z |

Three boring stories, and I'm probably the strange thing in each of the stories.
I heard something coming through the brush that sounded like the size of a boar, or dog. I look and look, see nothing, and then out pops a little armadillo. So anyone within earshot that didn't know I was there would have heard a person laughing in the middle of the woods. Central Florida has these things called prairies that are huge grass fields during the dry season, and wide shallow lakes during the wet season. So if you ever look at a map of the woods there and see something labeled an "Island" in the middle of a bunch of land, then that is the reason. I had went out into a National Forest and set up a telescope in the middle of one with a friend. We spotted one of the big moons go across Jupiter, and I think we got a pretty good view of the rings around Saturn. Had a little cd player playing some classical music even. I see some headlights off in the distance coming down the road that is parallel to the south side of the prairie so I turn the music off and just watch. About two hundred yards away the truck slows down and Q-beams start dicing through the woods, you could here some pop-country music playing, and then dogs start barking. The guys take a few shots, the dogs stop barking, we hunker down, a minute or two goes by, and then the truck speeds off. My friend and I laugh about it, then I turn around and look in the treeline on the north of the prairie, and I see a single red LED light turn on, and then turn off. And that was the weird thing to me - what was the red light? I had went back out there another time during a meteor shower and watched a meteorite come over head and leave a glowing trail in the sky. |

Backpacking/grouse hunting trip in the Quehanna Wild Area with two buddies. After dark sitting around the fire. A pack of coyotes was close, well under 100 yards, making a hell of a racket, but they were coyotes so no worries. Then there was a different type of howl....the only thing we could think was wolf.... same distance.… started in a very low register and slowly rose in frequency and volume. Then no more coyote noises. Freaked us out enough to load our unloaded shotguns, and for me to pull the magazine plug on mine to get some extra shells in there.
Same type of trip the following year in the Hammersley Wild Area camped at the head of Bell Branch Hollow. Just going to sleep when we heard LOUD steps coming from a great distance. Not a bear or a deer... they move fairly quietly. Heard it coming for for over a minute, louder and louder, went right through our camp and kept going. I was tucked in the bag too tight to get a look. Don't know what it was, but I've spent a lot of nights in the woods and never heard anything walking that loud at night before. |

Walking in the New England woods with my GSD one Summer day, we say a 12” snowflake fall from a clear blue sky. By the time it hit the ground, it shrunk to a couple inches & left a few dew drops on leaves.
My GSD alerted and followed it as it drifted from treetop to the ground & got that “where did it go?” look reserved for laser pointer play. I spoke with a couple meteorologist patients who just said: huh? Never heard of it... |

20 dildos arranged in a circle covered in blood, with dozens of burnt candles and a yellow spray painted cross in the center, a noose on a tree about 15 feet to the south, and a machete and what looked like a paintball gun close by as well. It looked old, like it had been there for months. I nope'd out. |

Tag for creepy reading.
My friend and I were walking around on his BIL's land. About a mile from his house on the bank of the creek that ran through his property there was a pile of rocks about 2' tall. Under the rock at the top of the pile was torn and burnt pieces of pictures of someone. There was dried mounts of wax around the rocks where candles had been. Probably from teens messing around. It was an odd thing to find in a secluded location, though. |

Nothing incredibly strange here but I've had some pretty fun experiences with animals not being aware. A lot of times while hunting and hiking I'll sit and rest where I can somewhat conceal myself and watch a trail or clearing. Standard stuff.
I've had a coyote come down a trail I was sitting near and not even see me until he was about to run into me.. When I finally caught his eye he stopped right in his tracks, bounced backwards and flipped around like a cartoon character, and ran off the other way Had a rabbit come shuffling down a log I was sitting on, not seeing me at all until he was about to run into me.. he stopped dead cold and sat next to me on the log. I stayed motionless as well. I sat next to this rabbit for probably 10 minutes before I finally got tired of not moving, shifted a bit and he was gone Had a chipmunk run up my leg and sit on my knee, and proceed to eat his mouth full of seeds It's always surprising to me how much action is going on in the woods once you stop making noise and allow the animals to settle down |

When i was 15 I went out in the woods in middle WA state with a cousin and his friend. It got nighttime so We set up for the nigjt. We were swapping lies and somehow the stories got turned to big cats and how the funny thing is they see you but you don't see them. At that moment, the moon pops out from behind a cloud and we see the reflection of light from a mountain lion's eyes looking right at us not more that ten yards away. It was a long time until morning. |

There is a place called Turkey Mountain in Tulsa. These days it is a nice family place to go, but many years ago it was a gay hookup area. It was also a place mountain bikers went. I'd run across all kinds of gay stuff out in the deep part of the trails. Some would try to sabotage the trails to dissuade mountain bikers from riding, so always had to be on the lookout for that. Even came across a homeless encampment. That was interesting. It was a rather large compound out in the deep woods. No one was around at the time, but it was clearly being used. The general rule for us mountain bikers was to never back into the parking spots because that was supposedly the sign you were looking for a hookup. So naturally we convinced my step brother to back into his parking spot the first time he met us to ride. Quoted:

We never could figure out what caused it. The ground is generally hard pack red clay, not easy to dig in, even with a backhoe. And trees around it, so no chance a backhoe could get to it. Snowshoed in to a yurt up on the Continental divide. The rest of the group went off to do a small night home and explore the area while I melted snow for water and started food prep. I stepped out down the front path a bit and looked around with a flashlight, only to see to glowing eyes reflected back at me.
This isn't too uncommon..but having the eyes suddenly, silently, and very quickly start coming TOWARD me made me head back in pretty quickly. I kept an eye out for the rest of the group in case they had any trouble, but no one else had seen anything. |
| I was with a friend scouting camping spots and came across what look like a hunting camp only there was several dozen men and women and every single one of the men was wearing plaid and every single one of the women was wearing a skirt. And every person we saw had a rifle slung. And the whole damn lot of them were just standing there staring at us. |

| Not really unexplainable, but when I was 12 or so I was out in the woods hunting squirrels with a .22. I came to a small grassy clearing and there was a dude laying on the middle of it sleeping in the sun. This is about a half mile from any road and about a mile from any houses or other buildings. I kept going on my way. Wasn't sure if he was dead or sleeping. Came by on my way back a while later and he was gone. |

Not THAT difficult to explain, but I am still really curious about it.
Mountain biking (at night, illegally) in Washington's Crossing State Park around 2004. We were pretty deep in the park, surrounded by trees that were 25-35' tall. Relatively close to us the very tops of the trees were illuminated by a green laser shining horizontally through the leaves. Because of the thickness of the trees and the angle that the laser was coming from, it had to have been shined from a good distance away. It was NOT shining up from the ground, or even at a 45° angle or anything... It was nearly horizontal. And it was bright. Brighter than targeting lasers that I've seen. It was holding relatively still, not sweeping back and forth like I would expect if someone was waving it around in their hand, but it WAS moving maybe on a loose tripod. I would estimate it moved no more than 10' in any direction. I was curious, and I had faith in my ability to outrun almost anyone in the woods at night on my bicycle. But the rest of my group were freaked out and wanted to move away quickly, so I went along with the group. I still wonder where it was coming from and what the purpose was. |
|
When I was in high school my friends and I had a spot at a state park we always camped at. Not exactly secluded, but we intentionally picked it so we could get away with things high school kids shouldn't be doing, so we were a little hidden and the woods behind it weren't exactly the beaten path. One campout we hiked to a clearing and found probably a 10 foot circle where trees about 2 or 3 inches thick had all been bent together to form a giant dome and a bunch of brush was piled on top to make a shelter. I assume a person did it, but I don't know how someone could easily do it, and considering how much work it would take, I don't see how it would have been worth the effort. |
