I've got half a mind to replace it with one.   What do they cost and how big are they.   Is there a performance hit?

I'll often do that on a Sunday morning myself.  Where do you hang out?  Last time I went uptown to the Bean Cycle, and then there's that place off of Elizabeth and Shields next to the King Soopers.

You sure you just don't have a CD in the drive and the BIOS set to attempt boot off the CD-ROM drive first?

Yep... no CD in the drive.

I think you mean the coffee shop off Elizabeth & Taft Hill.   That's the very place I went.  I actually said "FFFFUUUUUUUUU!" out loud.

I lost a TON of irreplaceable material off my HP notebook when the drive died without warning.

I has been planning to back up the drive "soon", but kept putting it off and then "FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU......."

I was LUCKY as all heck that a fellow ARFCOM member who is a techie was able to help me get some family photos off the hard drive in it's last instant of work-a-bility.

LESSON(s) learned...

Back Up OFTEN,

Back Up to MULTIPLE Media

When in Doubt, BACK UP AGAIN.

When My notebook was nuked (daughter fileshare / downloaded a nasty virus) all I had to do was wipe the drive and then restore from the back up.

With the price for Storage at rediculous lows for all the capacity you get, these days people who don't back up are just plain crazy!

Ouch!  That's always entertaining.  At least it prevented you from over exposure to hippies.

I actually don't keep any data on my laptop.   I use GOTOMYPC to virtualize my desktop at the office, and I use SD cards for regular data carry on the laptop.

But your "original" data is only half the problem these days.   There is nevertheless a lot of work and brain damage to get a new laptop drive up to speed.

Restore from the factory disks, update to XP SP3, update all the remaining things, then reinstall all your shit.

I wish I had the server space to simply dump weekly images of my hard drive, but with 120GB here, and 300GB there... just not realistic.

Your argument is invalid. They both use the same hard drives.
