Friend's computer.
She boots up and nothing happens. There's a black screen with the mouse cursor and NOTHING else. No start menu, no computer, no icons, nada. Any idea WTF is happening here? |

Are there any USB devices plugged in when booting up? If so, disconnect them and reboot (excluding keyboard or mouse if they are USB of course). If the PC has a USB keyboard or mouse, go into the BIOS and make sure "Legacy USB Support" is disabled. I have encountered the issue you described on two different occasions. One time I had to unplug a USB TV card on my desktop and the other time I had to disable the legacy USB support when I used a USB mouse on a laptop. Just something to try |

Looks like its this one, as she just called and said she could bring up the task manager. What a pain in the ass. |
