[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Weed eater string

I was trying to cut down some tall weeds/grass with my Weed Eater today and the damned string kept breaking. The thing is only a year or so old and maybe 2 hours use on it, so it's not like the plastic got brittle. Is there some super strong line I can buy that'll help me declare jihad on my weeds?

I have seen several types of replacement blades at Lowe's? Home Depot, etc.

replacing the string with blades? I think I've seen those...could have sworn my Weed Eater has a "no blades/discs" sticker on the shaft though. How do they work?

I bought a big spool of line at wal mart several years ago and it still works great. You might check to make sure you are using the recommended size and putting it on right.

Go buy the thickest string you can.... It shoudl help some.......... They sell different diameters

Soak the string in water for a day or two beforehand (same with those plastic blades)

it will last MUCH longer (you'll be amazed)

String comes in different colors according to how thick the yare .I think green is the thinnest and red is the thickest. Green don't last long. what color is your string?

Get contractor grade trimmer line. I personally use Echo trimmer line, you can find the same stuff at Home Depot. Just be sure it will fit your trimmer's head.

See if there's a Deere/Lesco service center in your area and get some of the commercial grade string. The diamond shaped strong lasts forever and cuts like a razor.

I trim around a lot of chain link fence. I use a cored line that holds up waaaaay better than anything else I've used, and I've tried most everything in my area. I didn't go with the blades because of the fence, but I imagine if you could get away with it, it would be a great way to go.

I'll look at the type, BRB.

ETA: It's called Magnum Gatorline.

No, it's the "spool" kind, not the type you put a "string" on either end of the spinning head.

I get 15-20 minutes per "tap". A tap on the release button brings another 2-odd inches out from the bobbin.

I go through stuff as tough as 1" thick bamboo trunks.
