Searching for a small biz I can run out of the house and I keep comming back to this one.

If one wanted to get into the web hosting business, what would be needed other than servers, a fat pipe, some tech exp, and a decent marketing plan?

Can it really be that simple or am I missing something?

server racks, secure cages or room, proper electrical and cooling, perhaps noise reduction, off site back-up, a skilled administrator, maybe a security consultant, attorney, off-shore capability, etc.

just depends on the level of service you want to provide. i think the days of the one room ghetto hosts are over though.

It is possible to run a business such as this out of places like rackspace.com, theplanet.com etc.

However, you will need/want a very thorough knowledge of Linux along with whatever GUI server management tools are offered.

This eliminates the need for you to design, build, and deploy your own infrastructure but the management, policy, and customer hassles are still there.

ETA: Webhosting is a 24/7 business.  Hosting customers need help at all hours and times, you'll need to make sure you can be on the ball when something goes wrong at 2 AM on a Sunday while you are on vacation in Jamaica.

Our company hosts part of its software development stuff on Rackspace and they are top notch. Great bunch of folks to work with. We also host some of our own websites by using our T1 and a single server. All Windows boxes.

It really depends on how much you plan on hosting and how intensive the customers needs are.
