I know the general answer is ask the CO and I did he says its above him so now Im asking ARFCOM.
Looking for something to show the CO that says he or someone else can authorize civvie stuff on the M4's(Mostly Magpul) I know some say its his call but he says its above him(He mentioned it was big army who made the call) I know him and most others dont mind me using Pmags since i have them everytime I see the BDE/BN CO and CSM's Also I told him about the Trijicon RMR/Doc Optic for the ACOG(somehow 3 whole platoons all got ACOGS my last unit of 250 we only got 2) he wants it but needs a NSN anyone have them? So anything i can show my CO that says we can use NON INTERNAL(FCG) civvie parts on our M4. What I am looking to add to my M4: Magpul ACS Badger Gen 1 Tac Latch Hogue Pistol Grip |

Good luck- if your CO is bucking it up the chain you might be out of luck. I doubt you'll find something saying you CAN do limited mods- more likely there are documents stating what you cannot do. I simply told my guys they could change things like grips, optics, and other things that clamped on the outside, and they could add TacLatches, AcuWedges or something similar internally, but that was it. No major internal pin or spring replacements, for example. My guys could say the boss ok'd it, and I never got hassled by my higher. If your CO is already asking higher for permission, it's a lot harder to do.
Hope somebody smarter than me can find you something useful |

I just did it. The stuff your talking about doesnt affect the function of the weapon. Right now there is a tacitcal latch, and a magpul grip on my rifle. There used to be a magpul stock on it too. I also brought my own sights with me in case I wanted to mount it(Aimpoint m2 and 3x). Additionally my mags have magpul followers and wolff springs in them. I know of a, then SSG now SFC, that replaced his firing pin with his own and has a spare bolt in his stock.
Its been my experience that if they see that you know more about it than themselves or the armorer(not hard to do) then you can do just about anything reasonable. Im the first person my company(especially the armorer) comes looking for when a weapon goes down, thus they dont bat and eye when I take a weapon down past the user level. Hell my 1SG and 2 PSGs had me put on, what some might call "unauthorized modifications", to their own rifles. |
| Alot of guys in my company are rocking the Magpul ACS, those cheap CCA stocks, and various pistol grips. Noone has ever had a problem with it. I'm pretty sure you should just throw the ACS on, if someone makes a comment about it then oh well; not like you'll get an Article 15 over it unless your chain of command are complete assholes |

On my last deployment I was an armorer and had all the stuff stating what couldnt be done but so much stuff has come out for the M4 its really hard to for anyone to know everything that is allowed on them. MAGPUL: get some NSN's for all your awesome stuff fast! go to magpul.com and go to the contact section, there they have contact info for military sales that states if you call or email they will send you NSN's...they are also in the GSA but the out the good ol credit card thats not gonna help you much downrange |

If you show that you are competent....especially more so than they are....you can generally do what you want. Not many people fuck with a SME. ETA: dude - its better to ask forgiveness than permission. |

I gotta second the old adage of its better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
Its your rifle bro, and your the one carrying it in to combat. not some desk jockey officer. I deploy tomorrow and ive got a magpul ACS, angled forgrip, and EOTECH 557 sight getting ready to go on mine! |

The NCO in me says do it and I'll back you up but I'm not your TL or PSG.
I'm also guessing your not combat arms and your CO does not know much about the Law of Land Warfare or one of the other. So long as you're not changing barrels and bolt carrier groups and serial numbers no one really cares in theater. I've seen ten different buttstocks, all kinds of scopes and optics, and magazines. Chances are if you did it no one would notice. Talk to your NCO first (if your the NCO), go on AKO. Seriously, see what the hive mind says in the discussion groups. Or a quicker route. Go talk to JAG, take the components sans M4 to them and explain to them what it does. Ask for a legal review of adding them to the weapon system. You'll give your commander and command future reference, legal standing and so forth. But there are units out there with nothing but Magpul buttstocks or the Duostocks, its really a non issue. |

I'm currently a Troop Commander getting ready to deploy to the 'stan and here's my take: No barrels, FCGs, or BCGs... otherwise, go nuts. You're still responsible for the issued parts you're replacing so sign them in to the arms room once you remove them. I've currently got a couple of ONS working for 10" CQB uppers and DR/J-point optics for our ACOGs. Uncle Sugar does a decent job of getting the new stuff out to us in a timely fashion... but still nowhere near fast enough. And our latest RFI got everyone 7ea Brownells upgraded mags (with MagPul followers and springs) go figure! Go with what works... good leadership will take the hit for you. JMHO, YMMV, etc.
