Looking at buying a quality watch, with simple dial arrangement. Here are a few I'm looking at.  What do you known/like/dislike?  Other recommendations?
Oris

Longines

Fortis

Looks like you want a flieger or a field watch.
What's your budget?
Brands like Laco, Hamilton, Tudor have some nice versions.
What size are you wanting, standard 38mm-40mm or a larger watch 40mm-45mm?

Things I'd look for if I was you:
Swiss ETA movement (Miyota/Citizen or Seiko if you want to go a bit cheaper)
sapphire crystal

How much quality?
I really like my Seiko watches and they don't have to cost a lot.

Here's a simple one:

Amazon Product
  • Black solar-powered watch featuring stencil-like numerals and day/date window
  • 43-mm stainless steel case with hardlex dial window
  • Nylon band with buckle closure

In that price range:

Look at the Hamilton Big Pilot

Seiko Presage SARX029 or similar with the Urushi Enamel dial

slighly used Tudor Heritage Ranger

Eternia Kon Tiki

Ill check those out.  Looking in the $1-1.5k range.  Might go 2k if it's something special.

Also, I'm not set on a black dial at all. White dial with stainless numerals would be cool too.

Prefer numbers at the hours, as opposed to dots, bars, Roman letters.

I own both a Tudor Ranger and a Eterna Kon-Tiki.
Both are quality watches and are really great values pre-owned (especially the Kon-Tiki).

Check some of the big gray market dealers, you can really make your money go farther especially in the $1k-$2k price range.
I've used Jomashop.com for years with good results.

You are probably looking at "pilot" watches then.

Outside of what has already been mentioned, non-pilot, non-diver sport watches will include the  heritage Black Bay 36 had Arabic digits but will be over your budget by a little bit.

Oh.  Look up the Citizen Signature Grand Touring Sport model # NB-0070-57e.  It is an automatic movement (rare for citizen) and from what I've seen, it hits well above it's price class.  Lots of high end finishing details in a $800-$1200 watch.  Check Big box stores like Macy's and they layer crazy discounts on their jewelry and watches.  I bet you can snag one of these for $600-700 if you hit the sale right.

Going to throw another one in the ring....

Damasko DA36 or similar.

They have a really tough surface treatment that keeps he cases in good  shape even under harsh use.   They usually come on a strap, and the bracelet is a fairly pricey add on, but considered to be one of the best engineered bracelets in the premium "tool watch" market.

you won't find these in stores.  Only one US dealer IIRC.  Hop on watch u seek and look at hi res pics in each brand's respective subforums.

Might be above your price range, but have you considered Invicta?

Of those 3 I like the looks of the Longines the most. But of those 3 I actually own a Fortis and Oris .

I've been seeing a lot of Oris on wrists during my travels.  I do like their recent "vintage" divers and am looking forward to trying one on.  I just don't see myself buying one with my current divers.

Oris does make some nice watches. But the one I have is a diver and looks nothing like that.

But sticking with the style of what you're looking at how about a BALL fireman victory?

or fireman racer classic?

Check out their collections. http://www.ballwatch.com/global/en/collections.html. I think they make a few that would be in your price range.

I have a Fortis Spacematic that I got here on Arfcom 7-8 years ago.  It's been an awesome watch and I really like the movement.

I have a Sinn 856 that I like for a flieger-style watch.  It is pretty robust, and keeps time pretty accurately.  It gets knocked around a lot, and still looks fairly new.  They are based on ETA movements, but so are most watches, these days.

Because tritium vials have a half life and are generally ugly as shit when used as jewelry and not as night sights on a pistol?

Ball is/was a boomer fad.  They pretty much live on silly special editions.  They are the Chevy SSR of the watch world, who got a brief reprieve from a younger crowd who is into mall ninja shit and think that they need tritium tubes to tell the time on their tactically operating special operations.  Outside of that, they are just your standard ETA movement or whatever in your standard case with style queues adopted (stolen) from other brands.    Often by cutting / pasting the worst elements of Brietling's various pukefests.

So you really hate everything not Rolex?

Haha. There is nothing tactical about those. I don't own them.

I do however have this one. Attached File
And an original Fireman. It's a great watch. There is nothing tactical about it either. I also have a couple Hamiltons and seikos. The Balls are nicer.

ETA: OP that's the Oris on the right.

Yea. I like that dial a lot.

Case is kinda small at 38.5mm though. Did you have a size in mind?

I think 40-42 is a good size.

This will clear up OPs questions.

Fortis ETA 2824-2

Oris Stellita SW220-1

Longine ETA caliber A07.231

Seriously. It's all about the caliber, which is watch-talk for movement.   Figure out which caliber you like and buy that.  The caliber is the engine of your watch. It's what's doing the work.  The housings and straps/bracelets are pretty much secondary.

You have a point.  40mm seems like the sweet spot.  Some of those Oris watches are 45, and that seems kind go big on my scrawny wrist, LOL

I have a fair share of big name watches as i am 63 and always was one to ---well you know. my most fave now is one i just got a year or so ago a timex flyback ,in black and yellow. if you check around you will find the guts are the same manufacture of some some high end stuff .  kind of big  at 42mm if i recall but good for a guy that actually needs GMT . band not the best ,but because it was only $ 100. not a big thing to get a nice band . have had many folks ask what is that timepiece , more than any/ some others, not that i give a shit. it is disposable fun that will,  not be disposed of

I think you need to do more research... unless you are just looking to spend $2K on a watch... to spend it. I think there are plenty of $300-700 (or less) that will get you there.
