My brother has a Maytag Washer model:  MVWC425BW1

The machine is making a chatter and buzzing noise prior to a click that initiates agitation cycle. Sounds like relay chatter from the wav file he sent to me. I can diagnose and troubleshoot when I visit for Thanksgiving, but I would like to have the parts there prior to my visit so I can do the repairs for him.

We have determined it is not a valve solenoid or any metallic sounds from the motor or transmission.

Any thoughts from those experienced with Maytag Products?

Sears has the parts diagrams online.

My experience with Maytag was a front loader with a drum bearing that went... $20 bearing = $600 to replace the drum. Wouldn't buy another of their products.

I have the diagrams. Just need to know what the most likely failing component is.
Uploaded a sound clip.....after clicking and buzzing, the loud click initiates the agitation cycle.

Does it sound anything like this?  If so, you are screwed.

^Nope^
I guess I'm still ok.

How old is the machine? If it's one of the Chinese Maytags, you're screwed.

Check and see if there's a solenoid that shifts the transmission to activate the agitator. The buzz-click sounds like one with a sticking armature.

FWIW, I once own/managed a bunch of laundromats and this was a common problem. The solenoid coils were molded and would swell, binding the armature. It would not be long before they'd completely fail, with clouds of stinky smoke and occasionally showers of sparks. It could also be the binding of whatever lever/mechanism the solenoid is pulling on.

It will probably resemble this:

Is the sound coming from the top, where the controls are, or the bottom where the motor is?

Machine is 2 years old.

I will relay the tranny solenoid info...no pun intended.

He said it is hard to tell, exactly where it is coming from. Parts diagrams only show two solenoids up top. Those are for the water valves. The noise does not come when the valves are operating.

It could be the motor start cap.

Or the many plastic pieces of the splutch.

Or the actuator

Does it agitate? Or go into high speed spin? The answers here will narrow it down to the failed component.

Once the loud click is heard, it agitates.

I am thinking it is this part.

Ok I think you've got it. Send me a pm / email if that doesn't fix it.

Find parts online for best prices.

No need to disconnect the water supply lines. Unplug the power cord. Slide unit forward and lean it into the wall so the weight keeps it leaned back. You can get to everything from underneath by laying on your back. Make sure the pin of the shifter goes into the hole of the splutch.

Fixed my frontload twice with YouTube videos. Under $100 both times.

After his machine goes tits up for good, tell him to buy a speed queen.

He's only bored because the machines usually manage to make it until the warranty expires before they start to fall apart.
