Season 3 of the TV series "24" with Kiefer Sutherland has started here
and I am simply amazed. There is unit and a guy who is shown trampling on
civil rights, torturing American citizens (never mind the foreigners),
ignoring every law which protects you from "big brother"- of course
all for a higher good- and people cheer to this shit??

I know its just a TV show, but it shows a mentailty which puts "security"
above all civil rights and if this mentality wins, the great US constitution
will be gone.

Great Britain has shown that, if the governments "anti-terrorist" propaganda is
swallowed, one can slip from a fairly liberal society to a police state in less
than 100 years- and modern technology makes a much faster slip possible:
Slippery slope

Get over it. It is a good show, not a litmus test for the political leanings around here.

I rarely watch TV.  One show I haved watched and enjoyed is 24.  It is not real life.  It's a TV show.

In WWII,

Many civil rights were trampled in the name of security. But the great US constitution is still here. We are at war. Things change during wartime. The quicker we win, the quicker things will return to normal. Let our men do the jobs they were trained to do.

much preferable TV show than those d*mn "reality" shows full of stupid/liberal/BS/annoying-as-piss- shows

24 kicks a**--action, a good story line, gunfights, and decent dialog

People had a cow about Dirty Harry when those movies came out in the 70's too.  Critics thought Dirty Harry promoted fascism.

Sadly, per definition you can't win a "war on terror". Terrorism is an activity by
a tiny minority, which can pop up in every country. 90% of the preparations are
inside the head of terrorists. How can you prevent such an activity by winning a war??
That is even more impossible than winning the "war on drugs", where one can at
least ruin the ressources (plantations) necessary for producing drugs. The USA
nuked Japan and Japan gave in. The Allied forces took Berlin and war was over here.

But which strategic goal does the USA have to take, to win this war?  A pacified
Iraq? A nuked Saudi Arabia (biggest terror sponsor)? Ghettos for muslims living
in our societies?
While "at least doing something" certainly makes a nice topic for winning elections,
I don't think the Western governments have any real clue. So its ok if they suspend
civil rights bit by bit for an unforeseeable time? Wow, what has become of eternal
vigilance the founding fathers mentioned ...

That is exactly why the constitution seeks to protect civil rights from "heat of

re-defines "evil"....

Yep- even for self defense.
But I can assure you that its not the center of my world and there are other
civil rights in greater danger right now- here in Europe and the USA. Just
read the "slippery slope" article- I guess the early 20th century citizens
of Great Britain weren't really aware that they slowly became subjects too.
But at least it too was all for their "protection"....

Seriously. You've never heard of escapist entertainment ?  I am just so glad it's not another one of these goddamn reality shows where someone wins "immunity" by eating a horse rectum or live Madagascar hissing beetles.

Farscape (SciFi Channel) One of my favorites shows ever, was filmed in Australia. Like you I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a documentary.

p.s. Do you even OWN a gun ?

Guys I know its just a TV show.

But I am of the opinion that a lot shows in the heroes a society creates.
The honest cowboy, with his distrust in the "state" is gone and has made
place for a government funded bully who claims to make society
more secure by stomping on civil rights.

Btw, terrible tactics seem to be another 24 highlight.

So when I watch an HBO special about Sex on TV in europe, we as Americans *know* that there are nothing but a bunch of fat men and hairy women running around naked smacking each other with bratwurst and sniffing each others butts and that represents europe?

And you have to repeat our mistakes? The wiser nations
learn from the mistakes of others.

PS: Larry, judging from your reactions, that "war without aims-
or an ending" thing really has to hurt you. A little quote for you:

Listening to US leaders over the past six months, it seems that the unnameable, unknowable enemy in the war on terror is everywhere - and nowhere. The evil forces that would attack and undermine America are present in 'up to 60 nations' and everywhere from 'Brussels to Bagram' (quotes from US president Bush/ Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld)

Boy, clearing London, Brussels and cities in 60 other nations is going
to be A LOT of work....

PPS:As far as my location is concerned- sorry, no kangaroos here,
just Glock, Steyr and lots of old Mozart & Habsburg stuff:

Some of the old stuff is quite interesting- from a time long, long ago, when
the muslim hordes were stopped at Vienna:
