Well...
The old Packard Bell I'm on right now is a "hand-me-down" from my kid brother...

I guess he decided it was time to upgrade my stuff, and got me an early Christmas present...

He's a good kid...[:D]

The order details in my first post were a "copy-n-paste" from a surprise email I got from him...

Looks like he will be getting a new AR15 from me for Christmas...

Yep...
That sounds about right.
This friggin thing has put me through hell ever since I plugged it in...

Hopefully the Dell is more "user friendly" [:D]

BTW...

Can ANYONE tell me what the hell I've got on the way ???

I don't understand ANY of that mumbo-jumbo in the description...
I assume it will be faster than what I've got ?
Link Posted: 6/24/2003 11:02:13 PM EDT
[#9]
MUCH faster than what you've got.  Dell makes a decent machine, you'll be happy with it.

Here's a link to what he bought me...

He did say he "souped it up a bit" [:D]

I have a friend who works at dell, you know what that means :)

insanely cheap computers

With Windows XP already loaded, you won't have to go through the activation hassle.

You might have to tie that puter to the roof there Art. Don't waste critical ammo room.... [:)]

I think instead of tying it to the roof, I'd rather drag it from a chain behind the truck...

I hope Dell sends me rescue/start-up disks so I can "start over" when I screw something up...[:D]

Two words: System Restore......use it early, use it often. XP is very forgiving to the average user. Congratulations Art.

XP may be forgiving (I have corrupted it multiple time...) but it does not offer freedom.

Install linux and have freedom.

Art isn't a computer geek. Linux would simply make another target out of his new box. Bad advice.

Edited to add: Congrats on the new PC Art! Sounds like you have a cool brother like I do!

Wow...thats a pretty kick ass system there Art!  I'm sure you will be very impressed with the performance differences over your old machine.

Hey Art,

I cant make it to Bulletfest, and I also have an old dead Packard Bell.

If you want to take it with you, you can have it.
All I want is some pics!

What the hell happens in three years to a computer that changes it from a flaming sports car of a machine to one that just limps along ...
View Quote

O comn, you know the answer to this one, software.

That's why I believe the 3 year lifespan is gone, and a new 5 year life span has started.
The hardware is too far ahead of the software nowadays. Games and photo/video stuff seem to be the only thing 99% of the users do that actually tax these new computers.

Your new goal is to try your damndest to fill it up with porn to the point it will no longer function at a speed considered acceptable.

Come to think of it, get a CD with a full, none-Dell-ified version of XP pro. That way you can restore your system without losing any of your stuff.

I've blown my share of XP machines too, but like Gus said, Art's a "user", not a geek. Linux would probably drive him to computacide.

I couldn't have said it better myself...

For those that don't know me personally...
I'm 36yrs old, and only started fooling with a computer this last year or so...

Prior to that, I was a WebTV junkie. [:D]

So far, I've been able to stumble through the learning curve on my own...

I'll NEVER be able to use a computer to it's full potential...

Anything more complicated than flipping a switch to turn it on, and I'm lost...

I need something basic, simple, powerfull and reliable...
This goes for cars, trucks, and guns too. [:D]
