How do you know you need to upgrade the card. I ........my son is having problems with the display being choppy and last night it crashed the computer. So I ordered more RAM and that will give him a GIG +. But how will I know if the game is running at the full potential? The main culprit right now is Battlefield 2.But I did notice that on counter strike it can run choppy also!  PG

Battlefield 2 is a pretty demanding game, resource wise.

Install the RAM and see how it does first? It just might do the trick.

What card do you have now?

That card is pretty much at the bottom of the heap of the latest generation of cards, and won't give very good performance in a game like BF2.

Look at the nVidia 6800gs...just came out, for around $200 you'll get very good performance...and the ATI x800 or x850 would be a big step up as well.

Radeon X800 XL, the best balance of price and performance. Around $200.

However the ATI x300 series is specifically listed as supported by BF2.

So maybe, before sinking some bucks into another card, you might try the RAM first?

I have a GeForce FX 5500 OC and it does really well with BF 2.  They are around 120.00 at Wally World. I would look into that if you are budgeting.

So I ordered more RAM and that will give him a GIG +.

Is the harddrive running while you're playing?  If it is, then add more RAM than that.  We found that on the gaming system in the office that BF2 needed a minimum of 2 Gigabytes before it was playable, even with the two top of the line graphics cards we tried.  512 Mbytes was unplayable.  One gigabyte was annoying.  Two gigabytes is nice.  It doesn't swap that often with 2 gigabytes.z

Choppiness because of a dated video card is one thing. Crashing is another. If your paging memory to disk and the swap file is heavily fragmented, this might be your crashing problem. Although installing more ram might prevent lots of paging, it's still a good idea to clean up this file.

So you might want to disable your swap file, reboot the computer, defrag the disk, reinable the swap file (making it 50% bigger than installed physical ram) and then reboot the machine again.

If the machine continues to crash after upgrading ram and cleaning up the swap file, I'd take a look at whats running resident in memory, or at your original physical ram.

While listed as a supported card the X300 will probably need the graphic settings run at their lowest option. Functional but not ideal.
More RAM is always a good thing but a better video card is usually the best solution
when it comes to graphic heavy games.

You may want to search, online or at local shops, for a used but better than current video card. A lot of folks like to keep on the bleeding edge and are always upgrading. Kind of like BRD.

I am not sure this is online that he is complaining about right now Does the hard drive run while playing online. I'm almost sure it does to a certain extent. The game has to be in. Does that answer the question?  I don't even know if there is room for more than a GIG sheesh what the hell does it taketo make it run.The computers less than a year old and was not the bottom of the line by FAR!

I play on 1 gb pd 266mhz, with the bare minimuum CPU and a Gforce 5200 (the 6600gt is in my kids comp)

I NEVER have lock ups or any problems of any kind.

I never had a problem with an x800XL.  The 9800XT is the one that is teh suck compared to any GeForce 66 or higher card

The GeForce is still a better card though.  Being able to do HDR properly, having Shader Model 3.0, and better drivers is important to real gamers

I feel for you.  I'm playing on my stock Geforce 5200 because I had to send my 9800 pro back to newegg for replacement.  The game sucks on the lowest settings, but playable.

To the original poster, going from 512 mb RAM to 1.5 gig did wonders for me.  It eliminated all the stuttering.

You'll be happy to know I ended my 3 month boycott of nVidia video cards, and ordered a 6800GS...it'll be here tomorrow.  I'm still not happy with the damn 5700FX I bought, though...I didn't really beat it with a hammer lol...although I thought about it, and I've taken blunt objects to my shit before when it's driven me over the edge

I'm swapping hardware around now...I suppose I'll try it in one of these systems, and see if I can't get it to play 2 different games without crashing in at least one of them.

BTW, where did you get those snazzy green cables in your system?  They look pretty cool.

To tell the truth I dont care about the graphics as much as playability. It is nicer on the 6600 though but my kids play more than me. They kick my arse over and over too.
