Okay, I utilize a X300 WML on my G19 for the obvious reason but also for a less obvious one - a pseudo standoff device. Past experience has shown that WMLs utilized this way accrue permanent damage from powder burns. I'm thinking that I might be able to negate this by using cheap, replaceable static screen protectors on the crystal, i.e., cell phone protectors cut-to-fit. They probably won't last too long and won't do anything to protect the housing but as long as it saves the crystal then I would consider it worthwhile.

Seems doable but have to wait till I get back in town to try it out.

Methinks the light gets waaaaayyyyyyyyyyy too hot for that.

You talking about when training or whatnot? Just put some masking tape over the lens.

You're probably right but won't cost anything to see if it works.

Kind of defeats the purpose of having a WML.

ETA: No offense meant! Reading my response; it came out kind of "ass-ish".

You shooting with it turned on all the time? This is very simple... if you're using it mounted when training (and you don't need to have the light turned on) then protect it with a little masking tape. If you're actually needing the light to be turned on then just deal with the fact that the lens gets dirty.

It would more acceptable if it could be avoided altogether.

Well, I cut out and placed a piece of screen protector to my X300 and left it on for approximately 30 minutes. It heated up nice and hot and so far so good. Next thing is to go to the range and see if it will handle recoil.

Wow, I'm surprised.  Figured it would melt right off.

When you brought it up earlier, I was afraid it might too but no issues arised. Now, this was just with the lower output X300 and not the "U" model.

OP FAIL

1..X300 is not a lens.  It is an Optic. (like a big squid eye) It projects the beam.  It's collimating optic is like 3cm at least in thickness

2. X300 is tough as shit.

3. X300 has lifetime warranty.  Surefire replaces flashlights that take incoming bullets, with new lights.

4.  Scotch tape makes cleanup a breeze.

Chapstick has always worked well for me and wipes right off after a shooting session.

I'm talking about using static screen protectors as sacrificial protectors for the light's crystal. Avoid the etching and hazing that occurs on the crystal from shooting. Nothing more. Could be simple fix that may have some merit.

That sounds like an idea. I EDC my WML in pocket when it's not on my gun so I wonder if it'll rub off?

Not quite. The WML extending past the muzzle is desirable (to me). It serves as a standoff device to aid in preventing an intentional (or unintentional) out-of-battery condition.

So I'm yet again out of town and bored. I just realized that my WML that has been in my pocket since 7:00 this morning still has the static film applied on the crystal. This at least tells me that it will stay put while I EDC it in pocket. Hopefully, I'll get to the range sometime this week to see if it will withstand recoil and blast (if work schedule permits!).

Just thinking about this, maybe this has an application for optics as well (red dots, scopes). What do y'all think?
