Hi Yall,

I recently sold off the 1999 Toyota Camry and started a new chapter in my auto relationship. However, I am now getting pulled into a civil lawsuit. The woman who purchased the car from me is claiming that because I replaced the vehicle speed sensor, the mileage is misrepresented on bill of sale.

From my understand, the odometer operates independently from the speedometer. Does anybody here any have insights into how this works?

From what I have seen a VSS simply pulls data (revolution/speed data) from a tone ring in the rear axle or in a transmission area. Typically the data is used for ABS, as well as to provide the speed data to the speedometer.

VSS is a part that can go out, and the act of changing it typically does nothing other than to provide accurate data to the gauges.

If she is thinking the VSS holds the ODO info that isn't true.

That lady sounds like a bitch.

While a car being sold at the wrong mileage is a no no, it sounds like she's just digging to find something to rake you through the coals.
People like that have no business buying used cars, she should have just bought a new toyota. Something probably broke after she bought it from you and is now sour.

If she can't afford a new toyota, that's not the problem of anyone else.

If the broken VSS caused the speedo to stop working, the odo also quit. That doesn't mean there can't be more than one VSS for different things (ABS, transmission, ect) but the speedo and odo are tied together AFAIK.

What Chromekilla said. Also...

The vehicles mileage will be in the ECM, and you can look at that with a scan tool. You can't just swap out an ECM from vehicle to vehicle and expect it to work. If the module has been replaced, it would have had to be re-flashed in order for it to work correctly in the vehicle. Generally a dealership does this. Some independent shops have this capability, but not all. Ours does. We have to basically pull the calibration out of the old computer and put it in the replacement. Along with that goes the mileage.

I don't know that it's possible to roll back the odometer through the ECM? If it is, I've never seen how to do it on any of our diagnostic equipment.

What evidence does she have that the odometer isn't correct?
