Can it be done?

I see most of the flat screen TVs now have a plug to be able to hook up and be used as a computer monitor. Do they work OK for this purpose? All I really do is check e-mail, surf ARFcom, check the weather...that kind of stuff. I don't do any gaming or anything that requires super graphics resolution.

I also know I can get a dedicated computer monitor for maybe a little less money but I would like a TV because then I can also use it to watch Directv, dvds, etc..

I know I am a little behind the current technology curve, but I think the TV would work better for my current purposes.

Anybody have any experience with this?

Any help is appreciated.

I've been doing this for years and it works well for me.  My current setup is a Sharp 32 in LCD tht has my home computer, xbox 360 and TV feeds hooked up to it.  You are correct that you wont get high resolution for a computer like you would with a real computer monitor but it works OK for me as I don't play high tech games on my computer.

Yes. I set my PC up to serve movies/music/pics to my main TV via a HDMI cable. Looks great. All I did was upgrade the video card to one that had HDMI out. As a bonus, it came with the software I use to play my media with.

I occassionally browse the web and play video games on it too, but IMO they are better done on the 20" monitor I used to have the PC hooked to. Same with picture editing etc.

This post is brought to you from my living room couch on a 50" plasma, computer is tucked neatly behind and out of the way.

I'm only S-VIDEO hooked in but a wireless mouse & keyboard is no different than having a remote control.

Plus If I can't find anything to watch on TV I have the entire internet to find something that peaks my interest from the most comfortable place in a home.

We run a 42" Flat screen as our primary TV and Home computer in the family room with a wireles keyboard and mouse.

Today's tv's have so many inputs, we were able to even hook our old VHS and home theater DVD box to it.

Consider the tv itself as the master component so all the connections go to it and that it then provides the sound signal to the home theater box for times when you want better sound for a movie, etc.

We just used a cheap ordinary pc, nothing special. ($300)

We did drop in a tv tuner card so we could watch tv in a "window" and record shows on the computer with windows media center but we never use the feature because we get most of our content from HULU (free) or netflix (for now ...).  I would not bother with a tuner card if I was doing it again but some may like to be able to record.
