Today was my 3rd day with Verizon. Yesterday the union reps came in to talk to us. Not being part of it, I get every thing a union person would get except someone to represent me to mangement. So, I know some of you like them, and some of you hate them, and PLEASE keep this civil, but need to know if I should or shouldnt join and why. Again, keep this civil. Thank you |
you're not a moron. I'm sure you're capable of representing yourself to management.....and more importantly: do you really WANT someone else speaking for you? |
I would join.........as someone stated below, your dues are tax deductible and you get a vote and voice in the union. Ultimately it's your decision though......

I said it in the original post. I basically get a rep. Someone between me (peons) and mangement. I get all the same benifits (INS and pay raises) if im union or not. Dont know if it matters or not, but the union reps work there on the floor like I will be doing. |

Are you an FNFT noob? And before the bashing starts, I've worked for VZ since the company came into being and GTE before that. If you want to join join if you don't don't. I work with both types. I myself joined the brotherhood 20 yrs ago and all I can say is in the future if you need help with a contractual issue you may or may not receive the same level of help that you would were you a member. That being said if you do your job make it to work every day on time you probably wont have any problems. Good luck with your new career. Rob |
FNFT? Im a peon CSA for FiOS

Man up and join. |

I have worked 15 years in a union shop, the first 4 years as a union member. I then got out of the union, but still worked as a hourly employee. The union and company has to go by the contract. If you screwup there isn't much the union rep can do for you, as long as the company follows the discipline guidelines as laid out in the contract. I made one major mistake in my time, I got what the contract called out for, and I deserved it. The union rep told me there was nothing they could do since the company followed the contract. (I was union when this happened). The union spent more time nit-picking and whining about insignificant details and very little time on the more pressing issues. Complain to the union about all the mandatory overtime, they said they can't do anything the company has the right to operate as they see fit. I finally got out, the unions have became a large money making political power buisiness. They no longer care about the worker, they just want to make sure you pay your dues every week. |
If the overtime issue isn't covered by the contract than there is nothing they can do. And as I see it most unions are slowly being pushed out of existence by being made impotent by member apathy and corporations refusing to negotiate. There aren't to many people out there in the financial condition to strike. |
