So, I've got two questions . . .

What percentage of my regular pay can expect to receive, and

if I collect unemployment, does that make me a deadbeat, zero loving, commie, leech on society?

Yes, I"m about to join the ranks of the unemployed?  Hooray!!

Friend of mine got 60% of his regular income, but I don't know how it works.

I qualified for $583 a week here in PA. I dont know what percentage it ended up being, they took into account all my overtime and bonuses. If you factor in not having to pay Medicare or Social Security or State income tax on it you can get by.

You need to check with your employment office, it usually has a cap.

You are only a leach if you are not actively looking for a Job

That. State dependent. Cap in GA was like 350/week. Not a percentage of your income...goes in tiers according to your income.

I was on it for about 3months in GA...you're not a leach...your company pays for it, part of hiring you and part of the cost of laying you off. After 26weeks...then you're hitting Federal funds now...hopefully it won't be 6 months. Good luck, man.

At the end  of the year, you must pay tax on your unemployment pay since it is not pretaxed.  I know someone who was hit for $5k.

Oh, you better believe I'm looking.  I can't stand not having a job.  I started working when I was eleven (paper route), and have held a job of one type or another for the last 29 years.

I fucking hate this shit.  It's been ten years since I've had to look.

You can have it taxed at time of payment or not...generally up to the recipient. If not...you pay at the end of the year.

A word for you.....

I went through this recently and it was the worst
thing in my life My self worth was beyond shot.

Be honest with yourself and others don't keep pushing it down
It chewed me up pretty bad, I'm better now, but it really was bad.

I truly hope you find work soon

Iheard Mississippi was 212, Washington was 589 or so.

It is state dependant.

Ohio depends on dependants

3 dependants and 1016 avg weekely wage, you get 508.

Unemployment Compensation is just a fancy word for "Skilled Welfare".

I dont know what it is in Minnesota, but here, and my home state , it is Insurance you and your employer pay into.
ETA:Funny thing, its called insurance in your state too. Paid for by employers
I will go out on a limb and assume you do know what insurance means?
(And no I would have NO objection to it being privatized!)

no
because unlike welfare you have to have had a job at one point to get it, it runs out, and you're required to be actively looking for a new job to keep getting it

Only some of it is, currently.  The feds are sponsoring the rest with tax dollars.  99 weeks worth, now.  I need to get fired.

Here's what MS gave me:

                           Gross                  Net

Previous Job       $600/wk.             $423/wk. (approx.)

UI                         $235/wk.            $211/wk.

I elected to have federal income tax withheld from my UI. As you can see, it was roughly 50% of my previous pay.

As one who has been laid-off for 21 months and it has been me consuming all my savings to not default on a single thing, and down to about $40.00 in the bank for the remainder of the month.  I wish you a hearty good luck with that and I hope your need is filled!

The maximum in Texas is around $450 per week. You can only get that if your income while you were employed meets or exceeds the bracket to receive the maximum benefit. It only lasts for 26 weeks, then your on your own.

Unemployment is insurance that you pay for.  I was on it for two months last year, and was not and still am not ashamed.  I got 40% of my previous gross pay.

Exactly. Part of what your employer pays in insurances and taxes goes to UI , so that's that much more he could be paying you if you were 1099'd as a subcontractor , and picked up all those 'extra' coverages and things yourself.

Have no shame whatsoever as long as you legitimately cant find work....too many slags are abusing it to the max , you've earned it.

While I don't think you are a leach, it does annoy the fuck out of me when people say "but I paid into it! It isn't the same as welfare!"

Yes, it is. We all pay into welfare as well. What makes a person a leach is if they sit on it and don't make opportunities for themselves. How many of these people out of jobs taught themselves a new trade in that time? That is plenty of time to almost master many skills to land you a job. THAT is a leach.
