I have heard about this phenomenon in the past, but never personally experienced it until today. A letter comes in the mail from U.S. Claims Services, informing me that a decent sum of money --no fortune for sure, but a sweet little chunk of gun money-- has been "transferred to the government" by my former employer. The letter doesn't say if it was transferred to the federal or state government, but asks for $80, in return for which I will receive the proper claim forms to recover the money.

It sounds like a scam to me, but they have the address, name, last four of my social security number and my former employer correct. They mention in the letter that they are licensed by the Texas Private Security Board and in fact they are, according to the PSB website.

Has anybody ever gotten one of these, and did you go for the deal? How did it work out?

Forms are free, and some creative googling should save you $80.
