I'm looking to buy a UTV and the main use will be driving from my house to my boat slip which is about 1/4 mile away. Ive looked at golf carts and dam they want a lot of money for them. In addition to transpo to the boat I will use it around the house to haul mulch, the occasional downed tree etc. May buy a plow for the snow (minimal).

Right now I'm loking at the Kawasaki Mule SX 4x4 which can be had for $7,000. Any opinions or suggestions for other vehicles?

You can't go wrong with a Mule. Best bang for the buck that I've found and I use it hard every day.

Kymco 450i 7000+ new. Good deal.

I drove a Kawai Mule 610 model today, not bad, but no excitement governed at 25MPH. granddads bench seat.

Honda pioneer 500 is direct drive w/paddle's and no CVT. good bang for your buck. 50 inches wide will fit in the back of a crewcab.

I bought this mule with 200 hrs on it for $3000 at a going out of biz sale, I sold it with 2900 hrs on it for $3000 4 years later. Never had much trouble with it, just a few small thing. I used it to push a ball picker on my driving range every day. I only sold it because I wanted to go all diesel for golf ball picking.

I have a Mule 4x4. I bought it to do chores around the farm. It has done great and I would likely get another Mule when the time comes.

Need to know if you have an overall size requirement for the UTV?

How will it be hauled around when it needs to be used somewhere else?

Is top speed a concern?

Is overall size for storage an issue?

2 person or 4 person?

I have experience with real old Kawasaki mules, just old Kawasaki mules, brand new mules, Honda Pionner 700-4, can am commander and can am defender.

The only machine in my list I would say don't buy is the Honda Pionner 700-4 (and if you are a Honda person then step up to the 1000, you'll be happier).

The new mule is nice.  But if you have the money to spend, the can am defender is work horse and has way more convince options that make using it for work more enjoyable.

To answer some questions about how I will use it. I'm buying a house with lake access and a community dock. My boat will be kept in one of the slips which is about 1/4 mile away. For the most part there will be only 2 to 4 people so I was looking at golf carts. They arent cheap and really have no other utility than a people mover.

I was thinking of getting a UTV and putting a rumble seat in the bed so I can transport 4 peeps, a cooler and some towels etc. Other than that, just hauling around some firewood and mulch. As far as transporting it, I have a full sized PU but doubt I will be transporting it anywhere once its delivered.

We have a Honda Pioneer 1000-5 and it a GREAT machine, albeit outside your budget.

I've heard great things about the Mule's, especially considering their low cost.

Not the fastest, but haven't had a problem with my 4010.

Dad has a Kubota 400 with 1500 hours on it.  No problems either, but it's definitely a loud, rickety, uncomfortable Kubota.

I bought an old (like really old) Kawaski Mule 2500; no idea of hours because the meter is gone.  I don't abuse it but don't baby it either--similar to what you are talking about.  Mostly to save me from walking & lets me go places I wouldn't voluntarily go on foot now that I'm lazy/softer/and broken.

It's not fast and it's not unstoppable but it's pretty tough as long as I'm smart with it.

Not sure how the newer ones are but, if you don't need speed/crazy off road capability, it's plenty tough and cheaper than some of the other new ones.

I have a 2007 Ranger XP 700 that I bought from an old neighbor. I use it for pretty much everything around the hacienda and out at the ranch.

It is a great rig, but if I was to buy a new UTV, I would look real hard at the Kawasaki "Trans4x4" model that you can convert from a 2 seater to a 4 seater. There are times I need a large bed to haul stuff and there are times I would like to be able to carry more passengers:

I've had Two Yamaha Rhino's now and around our Farm for general use and play, it's awesome and they can take a beating! They don't make the rhino anymore but the Wolverine or Viking are their new options of the same depending on the size you like.

Polaris 900 EPS 5 seater.  Awesome so far.

It came down between the Polaris and Can-Am for me.  When, not if, but when something goes wrong, the Polaris dealer network in the South is WAY more extensive than Can-Am, and when I'm in the middle of nowhere, I know I can get the Polaris serviced.  Also, while the seats in the Can-Am are more comfortable for riding and playing...when you're in hunting clothes, waders, etc...those comfy seats become very uncomfortable, and a bench seat is far more desirable.

I would look for a 2016 model of whatever you want quick.  I just got a new 2016 Honda 1000-5 for 13,100 last week.  There was 1000 in bullshit fees but 14,100 was about 3k less than a 2017 model.

I love it.  Holds 5 people or 3 if you want to use the bed and not nearly as long as most 4-5 sweaters with a bed.  It goes up to 55mph and is very off road capable.

Test drove a Mule today. Definitely sedate but for the price it will do what I need.
