Have a thumb drive with a good bit of information on it for work, plugged it into laptop, laptop made it's typical noise that something was plugged in but when I click on the drive it says insert disk into drive.
I've plugged the thumb drive in other USB drives that I know work but still nothing is working. Easiest way to recover the data from the thumb drive??? |

Try taking it back to the original computer that put the data on it. Or a newer computer. USB has several versions. It might just be a newer version. If the computer won't see the drive at all, there's little hope of recovering data if something bad happened. Note, that's rare. |

Close to the same issue here. Have an external hard drive that acts like it wants to work but when I plug it in to several computers it isn't even recognized. Had this happen to another drive a few years ago and someone I knew in the military ran a program that recovered all the folders and files. I remember that when they were recovered all the folder and file names were jacked up so I didn't know what was what until I opened each file. Better than nothing.
Anyone know how to do this or something similar? |

Possibly bad connection in your USB thumb drive. See this discussion
