Turlock Officer Wounded in Early Morning Shooting

A Turlock police officer underwent emergency surgery after being shot early this morning about a block from the police department.

The 22-year-old officer, whose name has not been released, was in the process of stopping a suspicious vehicle just after midnight when the driver pulled into an apartment complex near Geer Road and Starr Avenue. The driver and passenger got out and started to run in separate directions. The officer pursued one of the men after calling for backup. He ordered the man to stop, but the man opened fire, striking the officer in the upper right arm, right leg and chest, police said.

A backup police officer arrived at the scene and was also fired upon. That officer shot and killed the gunman, who was wearing body armor.

Police set up a perimeter and with the help of multiple neighboring police agencies searched the area bordered by Hawkeye Avenue on the north, Canal Drive on the south, Geer Road on the west and Olive Avenue on the east. Police told reporters that SWAT team members found the second suspect just before 6 a.m.

The Turlock officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest which stopped the bullet to the chest. Police credit the vest with saving his life. He is in stable condition at a Modesto hospital.

Good shooting by the back up officer. Too bad the perp didn't know it was illegal to wear body armor in the commision of a crime. Looks like he found out the hard way.
