I'd argue its great because it isn't either of those. Never took itself too seriously. And the basement scene is one of the best in cinema history. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes |

People, can we please have a thread about shooting up underground monsters with .50cal and not ruining it with political BS for once.

Too bad Burt Gummer is a gun grabbing liberal. View Quote To start he was added to make fun of gun owners. The original movie made the point that while other characters had guns, they paid little attention to them. However as the series continued Bert became the main character. |

Agreed.
Still trying to talk myself into thinking the chick is hot though. |

The whole series were fun movies, but let's not get carried away with "one of the best ever".
And they are tougher to watch now that I know Burt is a anti-gunner in real life. |

The first one is an awesome movie. Great character development. Many of us can probably remember the names of most of the major characters without checking IMDB because the movie made us care about what happened to them. Even Melvin.
The plot development and character arc follows classic story lines. Look at Val's change from the beginning compared to when he's chatting with Ronda at the end. There's also a great buddy dynamic with Val and Earl. It follows Jaws formula well. Like Jaws, you never see the monster for the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the movie. Slow build up and increasing anxiety and panic. And when you do finally see the monster, it's a great reveal (and the most appropriately timed F-word in any movie). |

I thought the first one was a fun movie. Great casting for that one.
I saw an interview with Kevin Bacon a while back where he said he originally did not want to make the movie. Now he admits that he would be willing to do a sequel if the script was good enough. |
