I posted this on another forum but figured with the traffic here I would get a quicker response:

1995 Nissan Pathfinder XE   4x4 automatic 179,xxx miles

I was driving to work this morning and drove about 6 or 7 miles before my transmission gave out on me. I was doing about 60mph when I heard a strange sound. Sort of a slow spinning sound. As soon as I heard the noise, I started to smell the transmission fluid burning. I wanted to accelerate but was unable to. As if I was in neutral. I coasted to a safe place to pull over and when I did, I noticed transmission fluid all over the underside of the Pathy and a puddle up front.

On the recommendation of Mr. Reverse, I had an aftermarket transmission cooler installed and noticed one of the lines was not connected. I figured it would be an easy fix; reconnect the line, add fluid and be on my way. Well, everything went well until I got up to about 35 mph. It would not shift into 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd seem fine but trying to go into 3rd it is like I am in neutral.

Any ideas on what is going on? If you need more info please let me know. Thanks!

Sounds like you smoked a clutch pack inside the tranny due to lose of fluid. Happened on an old 65 mustang I had. Line came off radiator due to fresh paint and was on the hiway. Put fluid in it and made it home but reverse, 2nd where gone.  rebuild was only fix. If you had the cooler put on at a shop this will fall on them to repair.

Thanks. I figured it would need a rebuild but wasn't 100% sure. Now I have to decide if it is going to be worth it to have it rebuilt.

The cooler was installed years ago. Around 2005 I think. I doubt they would cover anything. The one thing that puzzles me is the line where the rubber hose came off was not flared. Not sure why but you would think it would be. Seems like it might have prevented this.

Check around, may be cheaper to buy a used transmission. Check Striker auto in Cincinnati. Huge selection of used parts.

Wow. Thanks! Might not be as bad on the wallet as I had first thought. Will look into striker also. Thanks again!
