My 04' Corolla with 51K miles has developed a rough idle. Gas cap is on tight. I think the plugs are irridium (100K plugs) and are original. I bought the car new. Air filter is new. Should I go to the Dealer and have them plug it in? |

I have a '00 Corolla. At around 60K miles it started running rough so I changed the plugs -it ran a little better but not perfect. Cleaned the mass-air-flow sensor and it ran much better. This is a small sensor that plugs into the side of the plastic hose feeding the airbox, and after tens of thousands of miles it gets dirty making it difficult for the computer to tell what the fuel/air mixture should be (I think). If you have 100K on the original plugs I'd change those anyway. |

at 51k you should still be under warrenty right? take it in. it could be a whole host of things so honestly i cant venture a guess and be reliable. as for the iridium plugs being 100k, thats a load... change them every 30 or so(i prefer a complete tune up earlier, but my cars get italian valve jobs every day ) be ready to open the wallet, irridium plugs arnt cheap. |
If he has larger than a 3/36 warranty, then yes it's warrantied. |

I am out of warranty. The rough idle has diminished. Perhaps it was a bad tank of fuel. IIRC the problem started right after a full tank fill up. I also mixed in a jug of Techron since then. Idles smoother now. Can't say if it was the Techron or if it was the bad fuel. I purposely burned that alledged bad tank down to the low fuel light and filled up. Prolly should clean that MA Sensor area. We will see. My guess? Bad fuel? |
I disconnected mine and put it under the kitchen faucet for a minute -then let it dry before reinstalling it. Didn't seem to hurt it. |
CRC sells mass air flow sensor cleaner, you can usually find it at your neighborhood Vatozone for about five bucks a can. Brake cleaner works as well, use the chlorinated type since it evaporates on contact. Don't hose the sensor down, it only takes one or two quick shots. |
