Yes, of course I searched.

Anyone have a recommendation for a non-garage band similar to Tool?   Looking for musical:  talent, complexity, ingenuity, and creativity.   Something a lot better than your cousins' friends' girlfriends' fuckbudies' roomates' band before they got kicked out of west bumblefuck university for fucking geese at noon on the commons

I've about worn out my CDs of the real deal, and want to expand...

An old friend of mine (Todd) from Iowa is in a band called Taciturn. He plays guitar & his brother (Shaun) is on drums.

Another band that Todd listened to alot (he's a huge Tool fan) back in the day was Quicksand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwBK8FUH9sM. They don't sound exactly like tool, but are in a similar vein.

Hopr this helps.

One of the things that makes Tool so great is that I can't think of any bands that I can say are like them.

Isis is a good choice.  Also check out Mastodon, especially "Crack in the Skye"

I agree.  While there are other bands that fall under the same musical genre, that strange mix of metal and almost psychadelic influence (ie. Neurosis) there are not any bands that sound like Tool.

Instrumentally, Mogwai, God Is an Astronaut, Russian Cricles, Isis all have some really interesting music.

vocally, it seems like every hack nu-metal band on the radio has a singer trying to sound like the 'Nard. Not too many bands have the total package though. Hell, even Tool today sounds like a Tool cover band.

I absolutely love tool.  I am on a similar search as you.

I like some of the puscifer stuff I have heard so far (I've heard four so far, and I liked two of them.  The other two just didn't catch me the first time around).  Of course there is A Perfect Circle as well.

Not exactly like tool, but they "feel" similar in some ways.

There are other bands that I like for similar reasons that I like tool...but none of them are going to live up to filling tool's shoes.

eta:  Puscifer reminds me more of nine inch nails then tool
