I just watched this for the second time with my wife last night. I was too young the first time to appreciate it.
It is now my favorite western of all time. Val Kilmer did an awesome job of Doc Holiday. He has a ton of good one-liners. It's probably not very "historically accurate" but a VERY good movie. That is all. |

it is fairly historically accurate.beyond the Earps there were good representaions of real folks, it did show the Earps side of the shoot out, there are more than a few versions of what happened..Wyatts story never changed...
there is one known picture of Wyatt's Josie..she was HOT....and favored by the actress portraying her. it was Kilmer the Libtards BEST role, I don't know if he received an academy award for it, but always felt he deserved one, I feel he "got" Doc, having read 3 different biographies of him, he was a sociopath with a death wish who had ONE friend.. on a lighter note, check out James Gardner and Bruce Willis in Sunset, Willis as Tom Mix and Gardner as OLD Wyatt, Wyatt did "consult" to several Hollywood types in the early heyday of silent movies so the story line had an element of truth to it |

the portrayal of what made Wyatt the man he was by the time he arrived in Tombstone was well portrayed by Costner, but it was COSTNER for crying out loud 
and it DRAGGED, on and on and on and... the fine upstanding drunk that portrayed Doc, failed to capture what I felt is the "crazy" of Doc Holiday, just didnt hit it as did Kilmer..the laughter at death in the eye, the joy d vevere and the hate of the same. just didnt show the crazy....Doc would drink to a mans health in the bar, then cut his throat for his purse in the stable out back. |
| I guess Tombstone was alright, but I have never seen how people could rate it so highly among other films in the category of Western. I just don't see it being better than Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Good The Bad and The Ugly or a good many others. YMMV |
| Tombstone is probably the best western Hollywood has made since the 1950's. It is far better than any of the Peckinpah westerns and even edges out Leone's spaghetti westerns. In a two hour movie, there is almost nothing that doesn't serve to advance the plot or to provide entertaining action. Most of the "modern" westerns seem to suffer from one of two large flaws. They are either very slow-paced, with long stretches that seem to do nothing other than to allow the directors to show us pretty pictures of scenery; or they are depressing, with evil men as the protagonists. In short, Tombstone did what few other westerns had done since John Ford stopped making films; it made westerns fun again. Nothing since has come close to doing that. No one walks out of "Unforgiven" or "Open Range" or "Dances with Wolves" smiling. |

I would have to say Silverado accomplished that also. I think that Wyatt Earp is actually a better movie...but while I've seen that one 2 or 3 times, I've watched Tombstone over a dozen and enjoyed it each and every time.

Kilmer's best role...ever
It is a fantastic film, I was fortunate enough to live about 30 minutes outside of Tombstone (Sierra Vista) for about 6 months, everytime the wife and I went down there for some BBQ or an Onion festival, we'd watch the movie and pick new things out to look at/for when we went there. |

I actually thought Powers Boothes portrayal of Curly bill was one of the better characters in Tombstone. I still stick with my two favorite westerns , The Searchers and Unforgiven. With that said , Tom Selleck makes some of the best and most authentic westerns out there. Last Stand at Saber River , Monte Walsh , Crossfire Trail and Quigley Down Under are fantastic movies. |
