The wife wants a car, and I have never owned or driven a Mercury.

Do they have any well known problems?

Just doing some research before going to the lot.

Thanks in advance

Mercury is FORD.

Great cars for the most part as long as you get RWD.

I dont think that they still make that one, nice car though.

I was going to get rid of my Impala for one, but I didnt, now my Impla looks bad and I dont give a damn to fix it right anymore.

Id get a used Crown Vic now and save the money.

You'll just find 04 leftovers. It was cancelled due to slow sales. It was a great car that was VERY poorly marketed.

Cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road
I'm goin' to buy me a Mercury
And I'll cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road

You know that gal I love
I stole her from a friend
Fool got lucky stole her back again
Because she knowed he had a Mercury
Cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road
Well, she knowed he had a Mercury
And she cruise up and down this road

Hey now mama
Where'd you stay last night
Your hair's all down
Your clothes don't fit you right
Had my money
I tell you what I'd do
Go downtown and buy a Mercury or two
Cause I'm crazy 'bout a Mercury
And I'll cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road

I'm going to buy me a Mercury
And I'll cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road

I'm going to buy me a Mercury
Going to buy me a Mercury
Going to buy me a Mercury
Cruise, cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road

I'm going to buy me a Mercury
Buy me a Mercury
Going to buy me a Mercury
Cruise, cruise up and down this road
Up and down this road

She likes the Sable, Grand Marque, but is also interested in the ford Taurus. We want to stay under $20K.

You could probably get most '04 models new, for well under $15k right now. The dealers are moving out the 2004 stock to make way for '05s. Many '04 vehicles have gimmicks going on right now to move them, huge rebates etc.

Edit, spelling.

Can't go wrong with a Sable or Taurus.

Go Grand Marquis, best bang for the buck. Safe, reliable, tons of room, plenty of power. With my Vic I pull 27MPG highway with 3.27 gears at 55MPH with cruise.

Dont forget about that God-awful power-steering whine at all times, which is amplified under use. God I hate that sound. Its the automotive equivalent of fingernails down a chalkboard. *shudder*

If you do get this car, get rid of it as soon as the warranty expires. With all the new doo-dads and Ford's reputation for "quality" (having 7 of them in the family, I know), you do NOT want the post-warranty repair bills coming out of your wallet. Now if your last name is Gates, Walton, Rockefeller, etc, just ignore that and get whatever you want.

I remember the Powersteering thing also, not as big of a deal though.

My ranger had 236K when sold no problems other than the tranny I toasted by treating it like a 3/4T truck.

My Vic is a loaded with all the toys model and my only problem has been a faulty keyless entry key pad on the door. Replaced it myself in 30 min for $50. It has 121K so far.

No steering pump noises, that was from years back.

+1 again.

Brakes are fine, they're not race cars
SOME models had trans problems, look up a consumer guideline. Anything new should be fine.

3.2L engines w/ whatever trans they put in the old windstars were crap after 5-7 yeaars.

Again your are FOS, their engines are quite powerfull.

A crown vic is not a dragster, nor a rally racer they are not built that way. I LOVE speed, I like to smoke the tires (still) but I realize that most vehicles are not designed to do that, although they will. Hell my 4.6L SuperCrew with a Toneau cover weighs over 5,000lbs and it'll roll the tires under the right conditions, it'll outrun most every car from a stoplight, it's good to go IMO. If I wanted more power I' d have opted for the 5.4L

Mercury is bad for you. It causes brain damage and birth defects.
Link Posted: 9/24/2004 4:36:13 AM EST
I have owned 3 Mercury Sables in the past 16 years and one Tauras. The Taurus was a pos- constant problems with it. The Sables are great, imo. With the first two I owned, I only had problems with the brakes needing repaired almost yearly; both had 150,000 miles on them I sold them. I have a 1999 now with 94,000 miles on it; I have had the brakes repaired once - that is the only problem I have had with it.

In fairness, the brakes were decent on the Crown Dic.

The traction control was worthless. The car couldn't move in the snow. The CPU was so slow, it would spin one tire, pause, spin the other. Give me a limited slip any time.

The V8 SOHC engine was weak as can be. 190 hp??#$# Shit, my GM's I6 has 275 hp.

The only way that Crown Dic could spin the tires was due to shitty rubber and wet roads.

While the floaty boat Crown Dic was far better than the POS Taurus's they gave me, it wasn't great.

Wife has an '02 Grand Marquis. Only has around 40K miles on it. Gets good gas mileage with the 4.6 (24-26mpg), Front bench seat tilt's you towards the center of the car so after an hour or two on the road, my back is screaming at me. Needed a new starter within a couple of weeks of purchase, so far it's working on it's 4th starter. As far as American cars go, I guess it's a GREAT example of the design, engineering and workmanship you can expect. If we wouldn't take such a huge beating it'd be traded off for a Jap vehicle...OH by the way, it's got LESS usable room inside than the '94 Accord I got rid of last year...but at least it's much larger on the outside..

Update Thanks for all the replies.

My wife Jen already has a jeep grand Cherokee. She took it in Friday for oil change ,and her mechanic sold her, his wifes jeep.

I was all set to buy Mecury through work discount, She just loves jeep's. I told her If you want you buy it. And now it's in the driveway.
