Sadly, the SPCA kills a huge portion of the animals they take in for "adoption". If you must give up an animal, don't take it a shelter or the SPCA, take it to a breed specific rescue group.
Personally, I think that people who abuse or kill dogs or euthanize dogs that are perfectly healthy should be flogged with a tank track. Either that or have their legs run over with a bull dozer.

The local Humane Society does great work, but sometimes they get a dog in as a stray and I see the name they give it and I go.  |

Amen. ASPCA "shelters" have some of the highest kill rates of anybody. If you need to get rid of an animal, please, please try and take it to a "no-kill" shelter. I got this little girl from Angels of Assisi and she's be the best dog I've ever had. Thank God she wasn't taken to a regular kill shelter...she and I would have never enjoyed the life we have together.
