Totally theoretical question that I am sure I will get flamed for in some way...

Just curious, do you have to have any sort of certification to modify a panel or console in a experimental aircraft? Say you wanna add a glass instrument, like a GPS in the panel, etc?

Visiting my son, so this is not his post...

Anything experimental is just that, experimental.  So any panel, instrument or whatever that is not certified is up for modification.

However... If the aircraft is certified for IFR flight, then, that NAV package has to be certified for IFR flight.  So you can have a certified non-experimental NAV package in an experimental aircraft.  Packaging and installation is up to to the installer as long as it doesn't alter the certification...

To get a sense for how truly "experimental" the exp. category is, wander around here www.melmoth2.com for a while.  The very long genesis and evolution of Peter Garrison's scratch-built one of.  He writes fantastic stuf for Flying Mag, Car n Driver, and others.

I'm not an expert here but you MAY have to get it recertified by a Airwothiness Inspector. If this was the case then it could be a 5 minute inspection and note in the logbook(?). A different prop or engine requires a new signoff, I believe. So, a panel change may be under the same rule.
Give the EAA a call...
