That is a stretch. Very few people can get their hands on an M16 and a Blackhawk. Even those who can, obviously prefer to reject such behavior. The legal penalties alone are enormous. Shooting the shit out of a group of people is way different than hopping in a car and driving too fast. How many people on this board saw BHD and wanted to go sign up to be an Airborne Ranger? I sure did. How many watch it and go ohhhh and ahhhh over all the trick hardware and really really want to buy some of the cool toys featured in the movie and go shoot up a car with it a Bulletfest? Answer: many.
Everyone can get their hands on a 4 banger passenger car. The penalty for speeding or reckless driving is what, $150 fine? Couple that with a large percentage of kids watching a movie like 2fast2furious. The difference here is that BHD influences people but those people will not cross the line into illegal behavior that is dangerous to others. Latchkey kids who just got a DL walking out of the theater after seeing a bunch of way cool ricers trickin it up on the streets have nothing resembling that kind of respect for the law or each other. I see my own point is weak as well.
I certainly do not advocate blaming the movie. However, there are mixed reasons for the behaviors we are talking about. The movie is an INFLUENCE in this case, NOT the CAUSE. The world is full of influences, movies and TV being one of many. Your friends, your parents, your school, God (or lack of) are all things that influence people. The CAUSE is that the kids have no respect for the law or others. The movie is simply an INFLUENCE. This does not mean we should punish the INFLUENCE. We should punish the offender so they make the connection between actions and consequences. IMHO. Get it? |

I think you're right on point about TV/Movies influencing people. The medium is just too damn powerful. How many $$$Millions(billions?) are spent on advertizing? If it didn't influence people, why spend so much money? The Newz, MTV, etc, probably influence us on levels we don't even recognize. 2F2F probably influences kids to buy mitsubishis, rice out their car, and drive recklessly. And BHD probably influences kids to join the Military, among other things. |

I think this sort of movie might influence kids ot do this, but in the end, it's the poor choice of a human being-not a wanna be street racer car-that is at fault.
Any other way, just replace all the car references with firearms/video games/etc..and hey look.. it's the socialist/commie finger pointing method! He did something stupid..he now pays the price. |

We're forgetting here that the difference between BHD and 2F,2F is that 2F,2F glorifies racing on the streets and makes it look like the most fun a person can have. BHD, on the other hand, makes flying a Blackhawk and shooting an M16 in an urban environment look [b]very[/b] unappealing.

An altima isn't exactly a high speed machine unless its the 3.5s. The officer infers that it's the movies fault but there doesn't seem to be any real connection between this kid having seen this movie and then driving fast. Every time I see these things I always think of the cops narrator where anything over 45 mph is nearly 100 mph. It all gets hiped up. The kid could have been doing 65 or 110 I don't know and neither does anyone but the kid and his passenger. Kid going too fast, old man pulls out in front of kid going too fast, old man dies. Bad story all the way around. People drove too fast long before movies made it cool.

While I agree that there is a correlation between the media entertainment and the behavior that follows I don't think it causes it so to speak. The people who are apt to mimic behavior are the same type who would have done it anyway. The media just stimulates what they have that passes for an imagination. In short with smaller words, "stupid is as stupid does". They just need a little extra help. Give these goobers a free stretch of deserted highway and have at it for free. I used to live directly behind a movie theater. I can guarandamntee you that movies with car chases/racing TOTALLY influence the morons who THINK that they have fast cars.
It was like clockwork. Everytime the original Fast and Furious was over, there would be about 1000% more people dragging down the street. Yes, there were already a contingent of assholes who dragged after the movies, but after F&F, it was 10x worse. I wonder how many retarded youths were influenced by Fox showing the movie "44 Seconds" over-and-over again? Now THAT pissed me off! |

Ok...Kalifornistan should pass a new SRR Ban (Stupid Rice Rocket ban)of 2003 to save the children and stop the bloodshed.
Highlights of the bill will include: *Limit all cars to a maximum 10gallon gas tank...no more 20's or 30's in production cars. After market tanks will no longer be produced. *Any post-'94 car may not have certain features that would make it more dangerous to the public. The gubment will dictate those features based on emotion and stupidity. *All imports will be banned from 2004 model year foward. It's a modest start but when you are dealing with lives hanging in the balance we have a duty to start someplace! |

You times are changing when my dad thinks street racers should lose their cars when caught. The irony: In the 70's he as on the NW NHRA circuit. In the 60's he was racing for pink slips in SoCal. (Even raced Mulholland Drive once or twice.)
Irony or Hypocrisy. It's just shows that, for the most part, we (as a race/society) have been doing stupid crap for as long as can be remembered (How many of us played war or cowboys/indians using our bb guns? How many of us had to hide the welts from mom?). I think the difference is that the older generations tended to enact stupid behavior in places/situations that (usually) didn't endanger anyone else. Nothing wrong with tearing along at 140 on a closed straightaway. No way am I gonna do that down the middle of Rodea drive. Then again, I could be wrong. I usually am. |

Every city should have a designated area on the outskirts of town where racing is permitted, on scheduled days and nights only. Such an area would be very unpopulated but have good roads.
It should be fairly obvious by now that MORONS are easily influenced by the movies. Witness the rash of Jackass type stunts. This is a form of modern day Darwinism. If only it didn't have so much potential for collateral damage to those who weren't involved by choice. You can't ever make a real race car out of any Japanese passenger car no matter what you do to it. Real race cars always start with products of General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, and are readily available with V8 engines. A fast, tricked out Nissan, Honda, or Toyota is still a piece of shit no matter what its top speed is. Racing belongs to American Muscle Cars, and anything else is a pathetic wannabe. There needs to be some common sense laws concerning these high performace cars.
I mean who really needs a car that will double the speed limit? Some of these cars have had extensive modifications that make them the choice of street racers, drive-by shooters, and bank robbers. These cars can't get by with three gears like the rest of us and have four, five, or even six gear speeds. Nobody needs that many gears. Automobiles continue to be the number one cause of accidental death in the United States. They don't have nearly the number of deaths that we do in countries like India and The Congo where they have sensible car laws. Everyday 157 kids are killed in car wrecks on our streets. The powerful car lobby fights common sense regulations with every turn and were against seat belts, air bags, and even crash worthy bumbers. [;)] |

I heard on the news yesterday that a teenage kid with three others in his car was involved in a single car accident in an Atlanta suburb. One of the kids (female passenger) was killed. It was reported the kids were “influenced by 2f2f” and were driving too fast. Driver lost control and hit a tree. I’m so tired of seeing these damn kids with the sports car the parents bought them driving like a@@holes. They don’t need any movie influence to act like idiots, but things do seem to get worse after watching these movies.

Back before lawyers ran this country you might have gotten away with an area outside of town where street racing could have been done. Not now. Let one idiot crash and the city would be raped for allowing it or even looking the other way.
Back in the 70's on the south west side of Cook County (Chicago) there was an area we simply called the "T". It was a tee intersetion way out in the forest preserves that saw no traffic. Three eights of a mile down the road there was a jog in the road which prevented anything longer than quarter mile sprints. There were start and finish lines spray painted and guys with CB radios would set up on both ends to ensure no street traffic got involved. I use to race my '73 Plymouth Baracuda there. 340 HP engine with the police/taxi package. Went though the Mopar book and dialed up a winner. I wouldn't race anyone with a blower nor wheelie bars but would take on everything else. My favorite game was big block. Give me a 'vette, a 442 Olds, or a Chevelle for an automatic win. I'd run with about 2 gallons of gas and no passengers so I was as light as possible. By the time I got out of first gear I was a bunch of car lenghts ahead ... the big blocks would be catching up but I would always beat them to the 1/4 for a quick $20 to $50. In the couple of years I raced out there I never heard of anyone getting hurt racing. Guy blew up engines, trannies and rear ends but not each other. The biggest injuries were the results of fist fights that would break out when the loser didn't have the green to pay the bet. The biggest issue now is that kids race inside the cities rather than outside them. If they were smart enough to do it right nobody would be hurt, the city councils wouldn't be up in arms, and they'd still be having fun. |

We had 8 traffic fatalities between last Friday and Monday (NE Louisiana). The latest was a guy doing around 100mph in his BMW - he rear-ended an 18wheeler that was doing about 60mph, lost control, and flipped the car several times. Part of the truck's trailer was on the backseat of the guy's car - the truck was hauling - get this - BMW's.
Just a note: ALL 8 were NOT wearing their seat belts. One of the wrecks involved a van with 12 passengers - 3 were ejected, they all died - everyone that stayed in the van survived. Y'all drive safe and watch out for the idiots! CR |

This is not true in other forms of racing however. For example, in WRC racing (World Rally Car racing) 4 wheel drive is a definite plus and acceleration is not of utmost importance. |

Call me an old fogie at 35, but NOT ONE of these small-rimmed rice burners has impressed me. I used to have a '71 Stang and that car had mojo and was worth putting $$$ worth of parts into. No matter how many shiny, fancy parts you put on a peice of crap, it's still a peice of crap. You can't make dog crap into a pile of gold by spraypainting it gold. These dumbsh#t punks should spend the money they are spending on their tiny rims and 18" woofers on a REAL classic muscle car and then at least they'd have an okay investment. None of these crappy little Jap cars will be worth squat down the road. As far as the movie goes... I could care less. If it weren't for the innocent bystanders that get killed, I'd say let all these little gangsta wannabe's do each other in. The genepool will be better off.
